IREN shares took an 11% hit in the previous session, but the move had little to do with anything the company said or did. Instead, the stock was swept up in a broader selloff across the neocloud sector — a third straight day of selling — as investors weighed the cost of financing AI infrastructure and questioned whether GPU-rental providers can survive as independent businesses.

Two Separate Worries, One Directional Trade

The pressure came from more than one direction. Reuters reported on Wednesday that heavily indebted AI-infrastructure names were under strain, citing rising expectations for US interest-rate hikes and concern over how the sector's buildout will be funded. IREN was among the operators explicitly named as being under pressure.

Layered on top of that was a warning from Gartner, which projected that more than 80% of neocloud providers could lose their independence by 2030. Media coverage tied IREN's decline to that forecast, but the distinction matters: a forecast about an entire provider category is not a prediction about IREN specifically, and a possible end to standalone operation does not mean a business shuts down.

What the episode does demonstrate is how forcefully a sector-wide reassessment can drag on individual names. For IREN, doubts about the durability of industry growth have lately overshadowed any positive catalysts. The two questions behind the selling — can providers stay independent, and on what terms can further expansion be financed — both bear on how future growth gets valued, though they are not the same question.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

The Anthropic Story Is Still Just a Story

Against that backdrop, The Information offered a company-specific counterpoint on October 11. Citing people familiar with the relationship, the outlet reported a multi-year cloud-services agreement between Anthropic and IREN that has not been publicly announced.

Neither company has confirmed the arrangement. That leaves investors with a clear line to draw: a reported customer contract is not a confirmed piece of corporate news. The Anthropic report does not dispel the sector-wide concerns, and by the same token the selloff does not prove a setback in that potential relationship. The recent price action is best read as a reaction to heightened industry anxiety rather than confirmation of fresh bad news at IREN itself.

Redbank: A 2029 Grid Connection, Not Current Capacity

Company-specific news that did surface points to a long horizon. IREN on Wednesday unveiled plans for the Redbank data-center campus near Wagga Wagga, sized at 900 MW of capacity, with a grid connection targeted from 2029.

The project is in an early review phase, so the announcement should be treated as planning rather than available data-center capacity or completed construction. Redbank also sits outside the announced portfolio of 5 GW of secured power — a distinction worth keeping in mind, since the planned campus should not be conflated with that already-designated portfolio.

A November 24 Vote and a Governance Datapoint

Separately, IREN published its annual report to shareholders on Tuesday and filed its definitive proxy materials along with supplementary documents. The virtual annual meeting is set for November 24, 2026.

IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Those proxy filings also disclose executive compensation, showing an allocation of 9.1 million time-based Restricted Stock Units for each of the two co-CEOs. Alongside the financing of large infrastructure plans, governance questions now sit on the investor agenda.

The takeaway from the past few sessions is a matter of sorting: the selling pressure originated in the sector, while the confirmed company news concerns long-term expansion plans and the upcoming shareholder vote.
