IREN shares finished Friday's session at EUR 37.10, up 2.5%, but the gain owed nothing to the company itself. No fresh operational update crossed the wire. Instead, the stock moved in the wake of a broader rebound across technology names and AI infrastructure operators — a sector-wide lift that carried IREN along for the ride.

Part of that lift came from a rival. Applied Digital confirmed the completion of another 75-megawatt expansion phase at its Polaris Forge 1 campus, a milestone that rippled through the neocloud and AI data-center complex. For IREN, the question now is whether Friday's advance marks the start of a genuine turn or simply a brief drift in a competitor's slipstream.

A Sector That Rewards Capacity — and Demands Revenue

Sentiment in modern data infrastructure remains charged. Investors hang on every announcement of added grid capacity, because demand for compute power to run artificial intelligence applications shows no sign of cooling. At the same time, the capital market is pressing operators to prove they can convert expansion blueprints into actual revenue streams. That intersection — capacity versus cash flow — is where IREN's near-term direction will be decided.

The tension showed up in analyst positioning this week. On Tuesday, Lucas Pipes of B. Riley Securities reaffirmed his Buy rating on the stock while cutting his price target from $96 to $91. The revision reflects a tougher industry backdrop rather than any company-specific misstep: regulatory uncertainty, higher yields, and — most importantly — a slowdown in leasing activity across digital mining and high-performance computing. Even bullish analysts, in other words, are recalibrating their models to a more demanding environment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

Citadel's Disclosure Offers a Counterweight

Against that cautious analyst tone stands a notable vote of confidence from a major trading house. A Schedule 13G filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, accepted Wednesday, disclosed that Citadel Securities GP LLC — together with affiliated entities and Kenneth Griffin — holds 18,687,938 IREN common shares, equal to a 4.7% voting stake as of the market open on the filing date. A position of that size from a firm of Citadel's heft is often read as evidence of a solid fundamental base, and it gives the bull case a tangible anchor.

Separately, IREN has been working the regulatory levers in the background. On September 23, the company asked the SEC for a no-action letter that would exempt it from filing preliminary proxy materials for certain shareholder meetings. The request concerns votes on resolutions tied to selective share buybacks. IREN did not announce a standalone repurchase program — the move is purely about the procedural framework for future votes, not a signal of imminent capital returns.

The Chart Sets the Next Test

Technically, the picture is mixed but workable. Friday's close left the stock 2.9% above its 50-day moving average, a level it managed to hold in the short term. The more consequential barrier sits higher: the 200-day moving average at EUR 39.47. A clean break above that line would brighten the broader chart considerably. Fail to defend recent interim lows, though, and the larger downtrend could resume.

What would settle the debate is hard operational data. Upcoming interim reports on capacity utilization will show whether IREN can close the gap to those lofty analyst targets under its own steam — or whether the stock keeps borrowing its momentum from everyone else.
