The numbers land after Thursday's closing bell, and for once, the market's attention is split between the income statement and the shareholder register. IREN, the crypto-miner-turned-AI-cloud-operator, heads into its fiscal 2026 results with a California pension fund having just quintupled its position by a factor of more than 60 — while the stock itself remains a study in extremes, up 83 percent over twelve months yet still 47 percent below its November peak.

The California State Teachers Retirement System disclosed a second-quarter expansion of its IREN stake by 22,598,469 shares, a move that translates to a 6,197.8 percent increase and an estimated position worth $1.03 billion. That institutional vote of confidence sits alongside a $433.25 million holding from Situational Awareness LP, the hedge fund run by Leopold Aschenbrenner, which trimmed its share count by 19 percent quarter-over-quarter but saw the value of its remaining 9.5 million shares rise 8 percent on price appreciation alone.

The operational story has shifted faster than the share price

Behind the fund flows lies a transformation that has accelerated sharply since early August. IREN closed its acquisition of software provider Mirantis, a move designed to fold cloud operations and software capabilities directly into its AI infrastructure platform. The stock has gained 5.9 percent since that deal closed. A registration statement filed roughly three weeks earlier — covering the potential resale of up to 11,981,668 shares by certain existing holders — has been followed by a 9.4 percent advance.

The foundational catalyst, however, remains the Microsoft relationship. On August 13, IREN announced the acceptance of "Horizon 1," the first of four direct-to-chip liquid-cooled 50-megawatt AI cloud units at its Childress, Texas facility. The unit is the opening phase of a five-year agreement valued at $9.7 billion. During testing, the Childress site also earned "NVIDIA Exemplar Cloud" status on the GB300-NVL72 platform — a designation that signals technical maturity in an infrastructure market where credibility is currency.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

That was followed by reports of additional AI cloud contracts worth roughly $2.8 billion, signed in July with AI developers, which prompted IREN to lift its annualized run-rate target for the current fiscal year to above $4 billion. Market commentators have described the Microsoft acceptance as shattering bearish narratives about a potential capital shortfall, reducing near-term financing pressure.

The gap between narrative and numbers

For all the headline momentum, the earnings report will test whether the story holds up in dollar terms. Analysts expect fourth-quarter revenue of $130.084 million against a per-share loss of $0.5540 — a reminder that the pivot from Bitcoin mining to AI cloud services remains a cash-consuming transition before it becomes a profitable one.

The stock's behavior reflects that tension. Tuesday's session saw IREN close at €36.17, up 5.9 percent, propelled by a Bitcoin rally and a broader lift across AI infrastructure names including Applied Digital and Core Scientific. The 30-day annualized volatility of 136 percent tells its own story: this is a high-risk asset, not a steady infrastructure play. The relative strength index sits near 50, suggesting a market that is neither overbought nor oversold — simply waiting.

The twelve-month gain of 83 percent and the 47 percent distance from the 52-week high of €68.61, reached in early November, bracket a journey that has been anything but linear. The 135 percent volatility reading from the primary source tells a similar tale. What happens after Thursday's conference call will determine whether the next leg of that journey is powered by contracted revenue growth — or by the same speculative currents that have defined the stock's recent past.
