IREN heads into its fiscal first-quarter report on November 5 with a balance sheet that has grown far faster than its revenue base. Debt has climbed past $7.85 billion, up from $3.85 billion in January, according to media reports — a figure that reframes the entire AI infrastructure pivot as a financing question first and a growth story second.

The numbers land after the closing bell, and consensus is not pretty. A published estimate puts revenue at $229.81 million, with analysts projecting a loss of $0.73 per share. A year earlier, IREN booked a profit of $1.06 per share. Those are forecasts, not reported results, but they set the bar for what management must explain.

The Loss Is Real, but Its Composition Matters

The prior reported quarter offers a useful reference point: a net loss of $684 million, which included $450.4 million in non-cash write-downs, predominantly on mining hardware. That distinction — between accounting charges and cash burn — is one investors should keep front of mind when the new figures cross the tape.

What the market actually needs is evidence that contracted AI capacity is converting into recurring revenue. IREN said in July that roughly 85% of its target of more than $4 billion in annualized AI cloud revenue by the end of 2026 was under contract. That annualized run-rate will be one of the report's central checkpoints.

Contractual commitments, though, are not the same as booked quarterly sales. The gap between the two is exactly where the November 5 disclosure earns its keep.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

Cloud Revenue Has Already Overtaken Mining

For scale, IREN's AI cloud business has been credited with $70 million in revenue, against $66 million from Bitcoin mining. The cloud segment now carries genuine economic weight — but whether it can fund the buildout at pace remains unanswered.

The company's ties to Microsoft and NVIDIA form part of the commercial backdrop. Their existence does not substitute for scrutiny of how those relationships translate into income. Investors would be better served by detail on customer pipelines, lease execution and capital requirements than by fresh capacity announcements.

The European project extends the long-term runway, with first operations slated for 2028. Near term, it does nothing to solve the monetization question sitting in front of the existing business.

Two Very Different Futures Are Priced In

Analyst long-range forecasts capture the spread of outcomes. On the cautious end, 2029 revenue of $5.1 billion and profit of $628.9 million are penciled in — projections, not achievements. The distance between that scenario and the more bullish visions on the Street is the real substance of the investment case.

B. Riley cut its price target from $91 to $64 while keeping a buy rating. The combination says plenty: long-term potential still gets credit, but the valuation math has turned more conservative.

Options traders are bracing for a sharp move either way. A swing of 17.03% is priced in for the release, against an average absolute reaction of 8.31% over the past eight quarters. That is a measure of uncertainty, not direction.

What Would Actually Move the Needle

The bear case is not that the AI business fails. It is that debt load, heavy capital spending and ambitious growth assumptions collide if customer revenue arrives later than planned. Even rising sales would not dissolve that risk while the buildout keeps consuming cash.

A credible path from signed agreements to repeatable income would justify a more constructive view. Absent that link, lofty long-term expectations merely postpone the funding question. The strongest argument for IREN on November 5 will not be the largest construction update — it will be a demonstrable connection between customers, revenue and easing financial pressure.
