IREN's Cloud Unit Grew 182%. Cantor Just Cut Its Price Target in Half.
Published on 11/07/2026 at 07:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deIREN's stock jumped 21% on Friday after quarterly results, but the more telling signal came from the sell side: Cantor Fitzgerald reaffirmed its Overweight rating on the shares while slashing its price target from $99 to $47. The split verdict captures the debate now surrounding the AI cloud and bitcoin mining firm — genuine demand on one side, a steeper capital bill and a delayed buildout on the other.
At the heart of the bull case is a cloud business that is no longer a side bet. AI cloud revenue reached $200 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 182% from the prior quarter, against total revenue of $228 million. Gross margin before depreciation in the segment came in at 86%. Those figures explain why the market rewarded the print, and why the cloud unit now accounts for the bulk of group sales.
The profit line tells a different story. IREN posted a net loss of $263 million for the quarter, alongside adjusted EBITDA of $66 million. Bulls argue the top-line momentum justifies a richer multiple once the bottom line follows; skeptics counter that a loss of that size keeps the burden of proof squarely on execution.
A $20.3 Billion Backlog, Two-Thirds Investment Grade
Contractual demand offers the strongest counterweight to that skepticism. IREN's revenue backlog climbed 22% quarter on quarter to $20.3 billion, with roughly two-thirds of it tied to investment-grade customers. Management has described its target of more than $4 billion in annualized recurring revenue as fully contracted and funded.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
That customer mix matters as much as the headline number. Investment-grade counterparties lend credibility to the demand, but the backlog only becomes revenue once capacity is switched on — a sequence that runs through commissioning, testing, customer acceptance and equipment deliveries. Confidence, in other words, should scale with megawatts accepted rather than with fresh contract announcements.
January 2027 Is the Date to Watch
The $4 billion annualized run-rate target has slipped. IREN pushed the deadline from the end of 2026 to January 2027, with February now a possibility. The company attributed the delay to a customer-requested design change — network modifications sought by Microsoft — and to timing factors on the supplier side. According to Reuters, no financial penalties attach to those customer-driven changes, which spares IREN a direct cost for this particular holdup.
Cantor's revision reflects the same reality. Alongside the halved price target, the firm trimmed its 2028 adjusted EBITDA estimates and cut its valuation multiple to 6.5x from 7.5x. Both the earnings forecast and the price the market is asked to pay for them have been marked down — a double haircut that leaves the Overweight rating resting on growth that has yet to be delivered.
The $15 Billion Buildout and the $6 Billion Gap
Funding is where the optimism meets its stiffest test. IREN plans roughly $15 billion of capital expenditure for the remainder of fiscal 2027. About $9 billion is expected to be covered by cash on hand, committed financing and customer prepayments. The remaining $6 billion depends on planned financing and market conditions.
IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
That split is the crux of the investment case. The funded portion of the program underpins the thesis; the unfunded portion leaves IREN exposed to whatever terms the capital markets offer when it comes knocking. Customer prepayments ease the burden, but they do not eliminate it.
Weighing it all together, Cantor's more conservative framework looks more defensible than a generous advance on future growth. The 86% cloud margin and the quality of much of the order book are real assets. Whether they translate into a higher valuation depends on IREN hitting its revised schedule and closing the financing gap — and on the net loss narrowing as capacity comes online. That, rather than the size of any single price target, is the number that should frame the next reappraisal.
