IREN's Buyback Blueprint Emerges as Wall Street Splits on AI Infrastructure Economics

A regulatory filing that flew largely under the radar this week may say more about IREN's internal thinking than any analyst note published this month. On Wednesday, the company approached the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission seeking no-action relief — a procedural request that would let IREN skip preliminary proxy statements when obtaining shareholder approval, as required under Australian law, for future share repurchases. No buyback program has been announced. Yet the timing of the maneuver, arriving just as the stock absorbs a sector-wide beating, suggests management wants the machinery in place should it decide to act.
The broader market context explains the urgency. IREN shares closed Friday at EUR 38.76, down 4.5%, caught in a selloff that swept across cloud and AI infrastructure providers. The trigger, according to media reports, was rival Nscale's IPO registration filing, which prompted market participants to recalibrate valuation frameworks for so-called neocloud companies. CoreWeave and Nebius came under similar pressure even as the Nasdaq-100 managed a gain on the day. Concerns about the durability of GPU pricing added another layer of unease. Despite Friday's retreat, IREN remains up 15% year-to-date.
Two Banks, Two Directions
The analyst community has responded to the turbulence by pulling in opposite directions. JPMorgan upgraded IREN from Underweight to Overweight on September 14, lifting its price target from $46 to $65. The bank pointed to sustained momentum in customer signings, a firmer pricing environment in the neocloud segment, and the company's existing partnership with Nvidia.
Northland Securities followed on September 18, initiating coverage with an Outperform rating and a far more ambitious $99 target. Other observers reaffirmed buy recommendations with targets reaching as high as $80. Rothschild & Co Redburn, however, took a decidedly cooler view just days after Northland's launch, assigning a Neutral rating and a $40 target. The firm cited risks to unit economics, doubts about flawless execution of the business plan, and industry-wide GPU pricing hazards.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
That gap — between bullish bank calls and the market's recent de-rating — captures the uncertainty hanging over the AI infrastructure space. While major institutions emphasize operational momentum, traders are pricing in near-term risks to future pricing power.
Expansion Continues Regardless
IREN has not slowed its buildout while the debate rages. In early September, Nvidia announced a collaboration with Australian partners, IREN among them, covering a potential infrastructure expansion of up to two gigawatts. Closer to home, the company's Sweetwater facility in Texas was provisionally accepted into ERCOT's "Batch Zero" process as baseload capacity roughly three weeks ago — a classification that remains contingent on ongoing regulatory approvals.
The strategic logic behind these moves is straightforward: securing grid access and partnership credibility early. The harder question is whether the economics will hold up. Building massive compute capacity at speed requires proving that those units can be monetized profitably even as market prices for GPU capacity potentially soften. Rothschild & Co Redburn's caution on this point is not easily dismissed.
A Stock at a Crossroads
IREN now sits at an inflection point. The Nvidia-linked partnership and gigawatt-scale infrastructure plans argue for a strong strategic position in the AI data center market. Against that, the recent sector selloff and warnings about GPU price erosion counsel restraint. The upside potential from successful scaling is genuine, but execution risks carry real weight. For investors, the shares are likely to remain a venue for sharp swings, with the trajectory hinging on whether operating revenue can keep pace with the company's ambitious expansion targets.
