When IREN finally closed its acquisition of Mirantis this week, the market's response was telling. Shares climbed 7.96 percent on Friday to EUR 35.69, a move that suggests investors are reading the deal as a strategic accelerant rather than a simple dilution event. The reaction came despite the roughly 12.6 million new common shares issued at signing, alongside cash, restricted stock units, and other consideration totaling around USD 40 million at closing.

The timing matters. Just weeks earlier, on July 20, IREN had unveiled multi-year customer contracts worth USD 2.8 billion and lifted its annualized revenue target for 2026 to more than USD 4 billion, claiming roughly 85 percent of that goal is already locked in by contract. The Mirantis integration is now the first concrete test of whether the company can operate at the level of its own ambition.

A backlog that dwarfs the market cap

The deeper narrative sits in the order book. IREN's backlog stands at approximately USD 16 billion, anchored by USD 9.7 billion from Microsoft and USD 3.4 billion from Nvidia. Against a market capitalization of roughly EUR 11.72 billion, that backlog is more than double the company's equity value — a mismatch that is likely to fuel the debate between bulls and skeptics in the weeks ahead.

That disconnect is sharpened by the stock's distance from its highs. Even after Friday's jump, IREN trades 47.99 percent below its 52-week peak of EUR 68.61, reached in November 2025. For optimists, the gap between the backlog and the share price represents upside; for critics, it reflects the execution risk embedded in a company that was primarily running graphics cards for Bitcoin mining just two years ago.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

The numbers behind the pivot

The transformation is not without blemishes. IREN reported a quarterly loss of USD 247.8 million, though USD 140.4 million of that came from non-cash impairments that do not weigh on operational substance. The AI cloud segment, still in its early ramp, generated USD 33.6 million in revenue last quarter — a figure that signals the pivot is producing real traction rather than just revised investor decks.

Bank of America has also surfaced as a notable holder, with roughly 21 million IREN shares representing 5.8 percent of the share class. The position is passive, with no intention of influencing management, but it underscores that institutional capital is paying closer attention despite the volatility of recent months.

What analysts are saying

The analyst community has responded to the growth story with raised targets. H.C. Wainwright lifted its price objective to USD 90 on July 22, up from USD 85, while Canaccord Genuity set a USD 79 target on July 21 with a twelve-month horizon. Both assessments rest on the strength of the new AI cloud contracts and the assumption that IREN can convert its contracted revenue into actual billings.

The risks are equally clear. Acquisitions carry integration risk, and the issuance of 12.6 million new shares dilutes existing holders regardless of the strategic rationale. If contracted revenue is drawn down more slowly than communicated, or if Mirantis's orchestration and customer support systems prove harder to fold into IREN's existing infrastructure than anticipated, the bullish price targets would come under pressure. The Bank of America stake, for its part, signals presence rather than conviction in the form of active engagement.

IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The next checkpoint

IREN is increasingly compared to data center operators rather than crypto miners, and the company continues to expand its existing 480 megawatts of capacity, with the Sweetwater-1 facility targeting 1.4 gigawatts. New details on that project or additional GPU financing arrangements could provide fresh momentum in the coming days.

The hard test arrives on September 16, when IREN reports quarterly results for the first time since closing the Mirantis deal. That report will show whether the 85 percent of the USD 4 billion target that is contractually secured is actually translating into invoices and cash flow. If the integration delivers the promised efficiency gains in orchestration and customer support, the path toward the analyst targets above the current EUR 35.69 level remains open. If delays emerge, the recent recovery could prove short-lived.
