IREN's $4 Billion Backlog Meets a Market That Wants Receipts, Not Promises

The arithmetic of IREN's transformation has never looked more lopsided. On one side sits a contracted revenue base approaching $4 billion annually, buttressed by a fresh multi-year deal with an unnamed leading AI laboratory. On the other sits a share price that just absorbed its latest blow — a 12 percent single-day decline to €30.80 — as investors once again punished the gap between what the company says it will deliver and what its income statement actually shows.
That disconnect was on full display Friday, when IREN's fiscal 2026 results landed well short of consensus. The company reported AI cloud revenue of $70.5 million for the June quarter, contributing to total quarterly revenue of $137.2 million. Analysts had been looking for roughly $157.14 million, and the miss — rather than the backlog growth — set the tone for the session.
Wall Street's Conviction vs. The Tape
Two brokerage houses chose Friday to reaffirm their bullish stances, undeterred by the sell-off. H.C. Wainwright & Co. reiterated its Buy rating with a $90 price target, while Citizens JMP held its "Market Outperform" call at $80. Both firms point to the momentum in IREN's AI cloud segment as the foundational argument for their confidence.
The chasm between those targets and the current price is stark: at Friday's close, the stock sits roughly 55 percent below its 52-week high of €68.61, set in early November. The paper has now shed 14 percent over the past seven sessions and stands 8.8 percent in the red since the start of the year. Technical indicators offer little comfort — the shares trade 14 percent beneath their 50-day moving average of €35.94, and the RSI reading of 40.2 suggests momentum remains weak without yet flashing oversold conditions. The stock is also 22 percent below its 200-day average, underscoring a medium-term downtrend, while annualized 30-day volatility of 125 percent speaks to how jittery trading in the name has become.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
The Contract Machine Keeps Humming
The source of Wall Street's optimism is the sheer volume of contracted capacity. IREN now pegs its secured recurring annual revenue for 2026 capacity at roughly $4 billion — a meaningful step up from the $3.4 billion figure reported in July. That increase reflects the new agreement with the AI laboratory, additional customer wins, and contract extensions from existing partners.
The building blocks were already visible late last month, when IREN announced $2.8 billion in new multi-year cloud agreements with AI developers. At that point, the company had lifted its year-end target for annualized AI cloud revenue from $3.7 billion to over $4 billion, with approximately 85 percent of that goal already under contract. Management now says capacity for 2026 is largely sold out, and roughly $1 billion of the contracted annual revenue is already operational.
A Milestone Delivered, A Question Posed
The market's skittishness isn't purely a function of the quarterly miss. IREN's capital expenditure guidance for fiscal 2027 — between $25 billion and $30 billion — has also given investors pause. Those figures raise legitimate financing questions, even with $7.6 billion in cash on hand as of June 30, of which $1.7 billion is classified as restricted liquidity.
The company's infrastructure build-out continues in parallel. In Texas, the first phase of the liquid-cooled 50-megawatt data center dubbed "Horizon 1" at Childress was handed over to Microsoft in August — a milestone that had already weighed on the stock by 11.5 percent in the days before the earnings report landed. That delivery, combined with the quarterly figures, has left the chart bruised.
The Pivot's First Milestone
For all the near-term pain, the strategic shift is showing up in the numbers. AI cloud revenue now accounts for 51.4 percent of total sales, marking the first time that segment has overtaken the legacy Bitcoin mining business. The transformation from miner to AI infrastructure provider is, by that measure, real.
The central tension for investors is whether the multi-billion-dollar contract book and the steady delivery of data center capacity will translate into durable revenue growth fast enough to justify the capital demands ahead. The two research houses that reaffirmed their targets on Friday clearly believe it will. The market, at least for now, is demanding proof before it pays up.
