IREN's $4 Billion Backlog Can't Close the Gap Between Promise and Price

There is a peculiar tension at the heart of IREN's current market narrative. The company has secured a four-billion-dollar contracted revenue base for 2026, won designation from NVIDIA as an "Exemplar Cloud" for the GB300-NVL72 platform, and delivered a 50-megawatt data center to Microsoft. Yet its share price has fallen 55 percent from November's peak, and the stock shed another 12 percent in a single session on Friday.
That disconnect — between an expanding future pipeline and a shrinking present-day valuation — is the real story here, not any single headline.
The Numbers Behind the Sell-Off
The immediate trigger for Friday's drop was the company's fiscal fourth-quarter report. Revenue of $137.2 million for the June quarter came in below Wall Street's expectations, and the market responded with a 12 percent markdown. On a weekly basis, the stock is down 14 percent, trading at €30.80 as of Friday's close.
What makes the reaction notable is what accompanied those disappointing figures. IREN announced a new multi-year agreement with a leading AI laboratory, lifting its operational annualized revenue base to $1 billion and bringing contracted capacity for 2026 to $4 billion. The company also secured $2.8 billion in GPU financing, which it says covers 90 percent of the associated GPU investments.
The pattern is familiar to anyone who has watched capital-intensive growth stories mature: investors punish the lag between today's unfulfilled revenue and tomorrow's contractual commitments. Last week, news of the Microsoft delivery was met with an 11.5 percent decline. The completion of the Mirantis acquisition roughly a week earlier triggered a further 9.8 percent slide.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
Positive operational developments are being systematically sold, a dynamic that points more toward valuation skepticism than fundamental doubts about the business model.
Analysts Hold the Line
Despite the market's mood, two Wall Street firms reaffirmed their bullish stances on Friday. H.C. Wainwright & Co. reiterated its buy rating with a $90 price target, while Citizens JMP maintained its "Market Outperform" call at $80. Both cite the momentum in IREN's AI cloud business as the core rationale.
The gap between those targets and the current share price is stark — roughly three times the stock's present level. But the analysts' confidence rests on the contracted revenue base, which has grown steadily. In July, IREN reported $3.4 billion in contracted annual capacity for 2026. That figure now stands at $4 billion, driven by the new AI lab agreement, additional customer wins, and renewals from existing partners.
At the end of July, IREN had already announced $2.8 billion in new customer contracts and raised its year-end target for annualized AI cloud revenue from $3.7 billion to over $4 billion, with roughly 85 percent of that goal already contracted. The AI cloud segment now accounts for 51.4 percent of total revenue, surpassing the legacy mining business for the first time.
The $30 Billion Question
The recent sell-off cannot be blamed entirely on quarterly results. IREN's capital expenditure guidance for fiscal 2027 — between $25 billion and $30 billion — has raised legitimate questions about financing, even though the company held approximately $7.6 billion in cash as of June 30, including $1.7 billion in restricted liquidity.
The technical picture reflects the unease. The stock trades 22 percent below its 200-day moving average, and the annualized 30-day volatility stands at 125 percent. The relative strength index sits near 40, suggesting consolidation rather than extreme oversold conditions.
For a company transforming from bitcoin miner to AI infrastructure provider within a matter of quarters, such turbulence may be the structural price of admission. The NVIDIA designation is not a marketing footnote — it signals to potential enterprise customers that IREN ranks among the preferred infrastructure partners for the latest chip generation, a credential that could prove essential in winning deals of the scale of the recently announced billion-dollar contract.
Whether the contracted revenue base translates into actual reported revenue in the coming quarters will determine if the current skepticism proves temporary. Until then, IREN remains a high-risk holding that demands strong nerves — and a willingness to look past the quarterly noise toward the four-billion-dollar promise on the horizon.
