Jones Trading moved IREN to Buy from Hold on Friday with a $40 price target, and the market wasted no time endorsing the call. Shares climbed 21% a day after the company published quarterly results, with analyst Kevin Dede credited for the upgrade in media reports.

The enthusiasm has a foundation. IREN's fiscal 2027 first quarter, reported Thursday, showed revenue of $228 million — a 66% jump on the prior quarter. The AI Cloud segment did the heavy lifting, with sales up 182% quarter-over-quarter to $200 million and a gross margin of 86%. Contracted revenue backlog also swelled 22% to $20.3 billion, roughly two-thirds of it tied to counterparties carrying investment-grade ratings.

Then there is the other side of the ledger. IREN intends to spend about $15 billion on capital projects over the remainder of fiscal 2027. Of that sum, roughly $9 billion is expected to come from cash on hand, committed financing and customer prepayments. The remaining $6 billion depends on market conditions — a split that makes the buildout sensitive to how receptive capital markets prove to be.

Microsoft's Design Rework Pushes the Target Back

The company's goal of more than $4 billion in annualized operating revenue, fully contracted and funded, had been slated for January 2027. IREN now says that milestone could slip to the end of February. A customer-requested design change and the timing of supplier deliveries are behind the delay; according to Reuters, the requested adjustments to network design came from Microsoft and held up some infrastructure shipments. IREN has said no contractual penalties apply.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

That caps the direct damage. The timing of revenue recognition still matters: funding has to carry the expansion while new capacity comes online in stages, which puts more strain on scheduling than on demand itself.

Losses Keep the Financing Question Front and Center

Profitability remains a work in progress. IREN posted a net loss of $263 million in the quarter, against adjusted EBITDA of $66 million. The shortfall sharpens the need for a funding plan with enough slack to absorb delays.

Customer quality offers some reassurance. Investment-grade counterparties account for about two-thirds of the backlog, which speaks to the commercial solidity of the pivot — provided IREN delivers the agreed services on schedule.

IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For all the momentum in AI Cloud, the decisive test is whether the company can secure the open portion of its capital needs on workable terms and convert contracted capacity into live revenue. That, rather than the order book itself, is where the story will be settled.
