IonQ's Target Cut Is a Valuation Call, Not a Verdict — and the Air Force Money Isn't New
Published on 11/03/2026 at 13:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deB. Riley's Craig Ellis trimmed his IonQ price target from $100 to $75 on Wednesday, keeping his Buy rating intact — a recalibration of how much the analyst thinks the stock is worth, not a change of heart about the business.
The shares took it on the chin that session, closing down 6.5% as the reduced target landed in an already sour tape for technology and AI names. The Nasdaq Composite shed 1.1% the same day, according to media reports, with investors still stewing over the scale of AI spending at the largest tech companies and the returns it might eventually generate. The prior week's selloff across the tech sector was still echoing.
Quantum computing stocks more broadly had been under pressure throughout October as part of that wider technology weakness. Coverage of the period described a retreat from risk among investors toward speculative growth names — the kind of environment in which a price-target cut lands harder than it otherwise might.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IonQ?
Friday's Slide Was Sector Weather
IonQ came under renewed pressure on Friday, swept along with other quantum computing shares in a broader technology selloff. Reuters linked the weakness to disappointing results from Intel and Amazon, which sharpened worries about artificial intelligence spending and the profits it can deliver. By the following session the stock had steadied, adding 1.5% to reach €25.55.
The Air Force Check Was Already in the Numbers
On the operational side, IonQ confirmed roughly a week ago a follow-on award of $7.5 million from the Air Force Research Laboratory, earmarked for the second phase of its quantum networking project. The company was explicit that the money sits inside the previously announced $21.1 million collaboration — it is not fresh funding on top of that envelope.
