IonQ's 336% Revenue Surge Wins Buy Ratings, Not Bigger Price Tags
Published on 11/07/2026 at 17:03 | Editorial boerse-global.deWall Street's enthusiasm for IonQ's latest quarter came with an asterisk attached. The quantum computing specialist reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $173.8 million on Thursday, a 336% leap from a year earlier, and lifted its full-year sales outlook to $505–515 million from a prior range of $450–460 million. Investors responded by sending the shares up 23% — yet several analysts used the same session to mark down their price targets, even as they kept their buy calls intact.
Jefferies trimmed its target to $65 from $80, according to media reports, while Bank of America cut its own to $50 from $60. A third research house also lowered its objective but maintained a positive rating. The pattern was echoed at Morgan Stanley, which reiterated "Equal Weight" and reduced its target to $40 from $43.
A profit that doesn't come from operations
The headline numbers tell two stories at once. IonQ's bottom line showed a GAAP profit of $1.42 per share, but on an adjusted basis the company lost $0.29 per share. The gap stems from a non-cash gain of $896.2 million tied to the revaluation of warrant liabilities — an accounting effect the company itself flagged as non-cash. Strip that out and the adjusted EBITDA loss for the quarter stood at $133.6 million, far wider than the $48.9 million shortfall recorded in the same period a year earlier.
Revenue quality drew scrutiny too. Of the $173.8 million total, $83.5 million came from SkyWater, whose newly consolidated contribution now shapes the group's overall scale. The core IonQ Platform business grew quarterly revenue 127% to $90.3 million, with more than 40% of that segment's sales coming from customers buying multiple products — a signal of breadth in client relationships, provided it translates into recurring business.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IonQ?
Backlog builds, but so do delivery obligations
Management pegged the order backlog at roughly $1.2 billion. Capacity for the Superion-256 system is sold out for 2027, and the company is already taking orders for the following year. A planned installation of a Superion system at NVIDIA adds another marquee name to the roster, though the real weight of such a relationship will only emerge once the hardware is actually in use.
There is also a potential upside from IonQ's entry into Stage C of DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, where the program's possible value runs as high as $300 million. That figure represents an opportunity rather than a guaranteed award — concrete funded work would need to follow.
Fresh capital buys runway
IonQ raised $2 billion in October. Including that capital increase, pro-forma cash and investments total $3.7 billion, giving the company ample room to fund expansion. For existing shareholders, the dilution is part of the arithmetic, and the onus is on management to deploy the money in ways that eventually pay off on a per-share basis.
Elsewhere in the quarter, IonQ announced a partnership with QuantumCT on Wednesday. Under the agreement, QuantumCT will purchase access to IonQ quantum computers on behalf of organizations in Connecticut, covering more than 150 hours of cloud-based compute time.
IonQ at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The next confirmed date on the calendar is November 11, 2026, when the company takes part in the Cantor 2026 Crypto, FinTech, AI & Energy Infrastructure Conference in Miami.
The takeaway from the quarter is less about demand — which is clearly there — than about execution. A $1.2 billion backlog and a $3.7 billion war chest give IonQ time, but the next few reports will be judged on whether rising revenue starts to narrow the operating loss. Until those two lines move in the right direction together, the growth story carries a valuation question mark that even the bulls are acknowledging.
