It came from Nvidia, whose latest forecasts painted a stark picture of a CPU market being reshaped by accelerator makers. Nvidia now projects CPU revenue above $40 billion for fiscal 2028 — double this year's level — fueled by "agentic AI" systems that offload heavy compute onto processor cores.

Bank of America sizes the addressable server-CPU market at $210 billion by 2030. Intel's data center business brought in $6.3 billion last quarter; AMD edged past with $6.7 billion. Not a disaster, but a signal that the former king of the hill is now defending territory it once held uncontested.

The Manufacturing Counterpunch

Yet for all the competitive pressure on the product side, Intel's manufacturing arm is quietly assembling the more consequential story. CFO David Zinsner told a Deutsche Bank conference on Wednesday that the company's upcoming 14A process node is showing the fastest defect-density reduction since the 22-nanometer generation — a metric the chip industry treats as the clearest early indicator of yield and, ultimately, profitability.

The 14A node promises a 15–20 percent performance boost over the preceding 18A process, or alternatively a 25–35 percent cut in power consumption, alongside a transistor-density increase of up to 30 percent. To get there, Intel is deploying RibbonFET 2 transistors, PowerDirect power delivery, and ASML's High-NA EUV lithography — extreme-ultraviolet machines whose wider aperture lets chipmakers pattern complex layers with a single mask instead of several, trimming process steps and production time.

The roadmap is set: risk production in the second half of 2027, volume manufacturing in 2028. That puts Intel on a parallel track with TSMC's planned A14 node. Zinsner said external customers are already inquiring about capacity, underscoring how central the foundry model has become to the company's broader strategy.

A Texas-Sized Vote of Confidence

The most tantalizing prospect for 14A involves Elon Musk. Reports indicate the billionaire is planning a massive chip factory in Texas — reportedly larger than the Pentagon and Apple Park combined — with an initial investment of $16.8 billion that could eventually scale to $119 billion. Intel's 14A technology is said to be under consideration as the manufacturing partner, with production slated to begin in 2028.

Should that deal materialize, it would be a powerful endorsement for a foundry business Intel has spent years building as a second pillar alongside chip design. Tesla's Terafab in Austin, a $25 billion project, is also reported to be using the 14A process — a potential anchor customer that would help absorb the enormous fixed costs of new fabrication plants.

The Financial Reality Check

The technology story is compelling, but the numbers remain sobering. Intel's foundry segment posted $5.765 billion in second-quarter 2026 revenue, up 31 percent year over year. The operating loss narrowed to $2.089 billion from $3.168 billion a year earlier — progress, certainly, but the segment still relies overwhelmingly on internal orders. External foundry revenue came to just $293 million.

Company-wide, revenue climbed 25 percent to $16.1 billion, with the Data Center & AI segment surging 59 percent to $6.3 billion and the client business up 13 percent to $8.9 billion. Intel maintains its target of reaching breakeven in the foundry business by 2027, supported by a capital raise completed just over a week ago that has lifted the stock 3.3 percent since closing.

A Stock Caught Between Fantasy and Fundamentals

The disconnect between Intel's operational grind and its share price performance is striking. The stock has gained 146 percent year to date and 272 percent over twelve months — a rally that outstrips what the underlying financials alone would justify. On Friday, shares slipped 2.3 percent to €77.27 in German trading, roughly 38 percent below the 52-week high of €124.58 set in late June.

Investors appear to be pricing in a turnaround that is only partially visible in the numbers. Stanley Druckenmiller trimmed his Intel position last quarter in favor of AMD — a move that captures the broader ambivalence. Of 50 analysts covering the stock, 16 rate it a buy and 31 a hold, with an average price target of $107.46.

The company is also pushing into new territory on the product side. Its "Crescent Island" AI accelerator, equipped with up to 480 gigabytes of LPDDR5X memory, is slated for the second half of 2026 — a direct challenge to Nvidia and AMD in the lucrative inference segment. Meanwhile, the 18A process powering Panther Lake chips achieved qualification in July, marking Intel's first use of High-NA EUV in production.

The question hanging over Intel is no longer whether the company remains relevant — the foundry projects and process advances largely settle that. It's whether the transformation arrives quickly enough to keep pace with a market that is reordering itself in real time. Nvidia and AMD are growing their CPU and data center businesses at double- to triple-digit rates while Intel still works through its roadmap. Owning the stock is ultimately a bet on a schedule — and in semiconductors, schedules have a habit of slipping.
