An inquest has opened into the death of a 34-year-old rugby player from Maesteg who died after being punched by a security guard during a holiday in Turkey. Scot James sustained significant head trauma in the incident, which took place on July 5, and later died at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital on July 26 — a case that highlights the serious consequences of physical confrontations involving security staff.
What Happened
Pontypridd Coroner's Court heard on August 11 that the altercation began as a verbal exchange between James and a security staff member at a bar in Turkey. The exchange escalated when the guard punched the rugby player, causing him to fall and hit his head.
James was flown back to the UK for treatment but died at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant. A post-mortem examination carried out on August 3 gave the provisional cause of death as a blunt head injury.
Investigation Underway
Turkish police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the altercation. The inquest in Pontypridd has been adjourned to allow those inquiries to be completed before proceedings resume.

The case comes amid a series of international incidents involving security personnel and workplace violence. In Kenya, police launched a murder investigation after private security officer Baraka S. The hearing for James was one of several high-profile inquests held in mid-August. In Brisbane, proceedings continued into the 2019 death of Dean Sanderson, who fell from a zipline in Queensland. Evidence presented on August 11 suggested staff involved in that incident were not fully aware of the specific safety requirements.
Separately, a coronial inquest in New Zealand heard testimony from Dr. Philip Polkinghorne regarding the 2021 death of his wife, Pauline Hanna. The Crown solicitor cross-examined Polkinghorne about his activities on the night she died.
