Infineon has moved to lock down the raw material underpinning its power semiconductor roadmap, striking a multi-year supply agreement with US specialist Wolfspeed for 200-millimetre silicon carbide wafers. The Munich group said the deal shifts its existing procurement from smaller 150-millimetre substrates to the more advanced format, a change intended to steady supply chains for high-volume manufacturing.

The migration to larger-diameter wafers is widely viewed across the chip industry as a key lever for expanding production capacity and trimming unit costs in silicon carbide (SiC) component manufacturing. SiC is used chiefly in electric mobility, renewable energy and industrial power supplies, where it tolerates higher voltages and temperatures while wasting less energy. By broadening its sourcing, the DAX-listed Bavarian company aims to diversify its supplier base and reinforce efforts to secure critical inputs for its own fabs.

Server Power and Robotics Take Centre Stage

Alongside the wafer procurement, Infineon is deepening its development resources. The company completed the acquisition of Bengaluru-based C2i Semiconductors, whose team has been fully folded into the Power Systems division to bolster expertise in advanced power supply systems. Roughly a week ago it also unveiled a high-voltage hot-swap controller for AI server architectures — the XDP8HD40S-1, designed for DC voltages of ±400 volts and 800 volts — built to protect and monitor power paths as the energy demands of modern data centres climb with each new chip generation.

At the upcoming electronica trade fair in Munich, running from November 10 to 13, Infineon plans to showcase applications for robotics, edge devices and vehicle mobility under the "Physical AI" banner. The lineup signals an ambition to capture growth in connected control technology beyond its traditional power electronics franchise.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

A Choppy Backdrop on the Trading Floor

The strategic progress has landed against a softer market mood. A broad tech selloff hit the semiconductor sector in recent days, with rising interest rates and worries about stretched valuations weighing on the industry, according to Reuters, even as strong sector earnings rolled in. Infineon shares closed Monday at EUR 51.88, a modest gain of 0.7% on the day; by Tuesday the stock had slipped to EUR 51.23, down 1.3%, though it remains up 36% over the year.

Analysts are taking a mixed view. mwb research rated the stock "Hold" on October 15 with a price target of EUR 60. Earlier, on October 8, analyst H. Engel of Erste Group reportedly trimmed his earnings-per-share forecast for fiscal 2026 to USD 1.96 from USD 2.03.

Ownership Shift and a Date With the Market

There was also a formal change in the shareholder register: Norway's Ministry of Finance, reporting through Norges Bank, disclosed that its voting stake in Infineon slipped just below the statutory 3% notification threshold as of the October 14 record date, now standing at 2.9997%.

Investors will get a clearer read on operations in a few weeks. Infineon is scheduled to publish fourth-quarter and full-year fiscal 2026 results on November 10, the same day the electronica fair opens in Munich — a coincidence that should shed light on how resilient industrial demand really is. With a market capitalisation of EUR 76.54 billion, the focus will be squarely on margin signals for the new fiscal year.
