Infineon's Silicon Carbide Upgrade and Server-Power Push Overshadowed by a Sector-Wide Retreat
Published on 10/17/2026 at 15:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deInfineon shares closed Friday at EUR 51.54, down 2.9%, as a broad selloff in semiconductor and technology names left few chipmakers unscathed. The Munich-based group's decline capped a punishing week that wiped 13% off its market value — a swing driven entirely by the wider sector backdrop rather than anything specific to the company.
Rates, AI Doubts and Chinese Competition Weigh on the Sector
The pressure built in stages. On Thursday, unexpectedly hot US inflation data revived interest-rate worries across global markets, while growing doubts about the profitability of the massive global build-out in artificial intelligence infrastructure and intensifying competition from China combined to drag German chip stocks lower. By Friday, the mood had hardened into an outright exodus from technology and semiconductor equities, with skepticism over the durability of AI spending spreading across the sector.
Crucially, none of the recent weakness stemmed from company-specific bad news. Investors were not singling out individual operators — the selling swept across chipmakers worldwide, and even sector heavyweights could not sidestep the pre-weekend wave of profit-taking.
Analyst Caution Ahead of the November Print
With the group's quarterly figures approaching, market watchers are keeping their expectations in check. mwb research reaffirmed its "Hold" rating on Infineon on Thursday, with a price target of EUR 60.00. In the analysts' view, the upcoming fourth-quarter numbers offer only limited room for positive surprises. A sustained re-rating of the stock, they argue, hinges above all on whether the company can deliver margin improvements outside the AI boom.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?
Infineon is scheduled to report fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on November 10, a date the market treats as a key gauge of how the classic business lines — automotive and industrial among them — are performing. Despite the recent slide, the DAX-listed stock still boasts a gain of 37% since the start of the year.
Ownership Disclosure: Norway Holds 3.11%
Alongside the sector turbulence, shifts in the shareholder base have drawn attention. The Norwegian state's total share of voting rights stands at 3.11%.
Building a Position in Data-Center Power
Beyond the market noise, Infineon continues to advance its push into power supply for server infrastructure. On October 5, the company completed its acquisition of C2i Semiconductors, integrating the team into its Power Systems Division to strengthen digital power management capabilities for AI data centers. Three days later, it unveiled a three-phase power supply unit rated at 27 kilowatts for AI servers, meeting the requirements of the OCP Open Rack V3 specification.

Wolfspeed Deal Shifts Wafer Supply to 200mm
On the manufacturing side, Infineon secured critical future capacity through a multi-year supply agreement with Wolfspeed covering silicon carbide wafers. The deal moves the existing partnership onto modern 200-millimeter substrate technology, replacing the 150-millimeter wafers supplied until now and supporting the conversion of production to the larger format.
Further developments in robotics, edge applications and data centers will be on display from November 10 to 13, when Infineon presents its portfolio at the electronica trade fair in Munich.
