The German chipmaker's shares are on a four-day winning streak, and the timing could hardly be more consequential. Infineon's stock climbed another 2.98 percent on Tuesday to EUR 64.18, extending a run that has pushed the equity nearly ten percent higher over the past week. The advance, which led the DAX, comes just hours before the company's fiscal third-quarter report lands on Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. CET, followed by the analyst call.

Yet the immediate catalyst for Tuesday's move had little to do with Infineon itself. A surprisingly strong earnings release from US rival ON Semiconductor triggered a sector-wide rally in power semiconductors, with investors reading the results as evidence of firming demand across end markets where Infineon also competes — most notably in power delivery for AI infrastructure. That read-through has raised the bar for what the Munich-based company must deliver when it reports figures for the quarter ended June 30.

The numbers on the table

Consensus expectations call for earnings per share of EUR 0.448 on revenue of roughly EUR 4.13 billion, a year-on-year increase of about 11.6 percent. But the metric that will dominate the conversation is the company's stated ambition of generating EUR 1.5 billion in AI-related revenue during fiscal 2026. Investors want specifics on how that scaling will be achieved — whether through order intake, capacity utilization, or concrete customer commitments. A credible reaffirmation of that trajectory, or any hint of an upward revision, would signal that Infineon is a structural beneficiary of the AI infrastructure buildout rather than a cyclical participant. Vagueness or signs of delay would be read as a setback for the growth narrative, regardless of how other segments perform.

Two additional themes will be under scrutiny. The automotive business, Infineon's traditional anchor, has been a drag recently, and the report must show whether electric vehicle demand and silicon carbide solutions can offset that cyclical weakness. And with the stock still trading roughly 13 percent below its 50-day moving average of EUR 73.98, the technical picture remains fragile despite the recent bounce. The 100-day average at EUR 62.56 has been reclaimed, but the 52-week high of EUR 89.67 sits nearly 29 percent above current levels.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

A three-pronged tailwind

Supporters of the recovery case point to several reinforcing factors. JPMorgan's Sandeep Deshpande reaffirmed an "Overweight" rating with a EUR 96 price target on Monday, arguing that inventory destocking among industrial customers is nearing completion and that institutional selling of semiconductor positions has largely run its course. That thesis matters because Norway's Norges Bank disclosed on July 30 that it had cut its stake to 2.92 percent, crossing below the 3 percent notification threshold. The sovereign wealth fund held 2.98 percent of voting rights as of July 20, and such adjustments are often tactical portfolio rebalancing ahead of earnings dates — but they still signal potential supply overhang.

Operationally, Infineon has also strengthened its hand. The acquisition of ams OSRAM's non-optical sensor portfolio closed in early July, broadening the analog and mixed-signal business. And in a development with meaningful margin implications, the US International Trade Commission confirmed an import ban in July on gallium nitride power semiconductors from competitor Innoscience after finding infringement of an Infineon patent. GaN is becoming increasingly critical for AI power supply, making the legal win a competitive advantage in a high-margin segment.

The risk side of the ledger

The bear case is equally tangible. Despite the recent rally, the stock remains down more than 17 percent over the past 30 days. Annualized volatility of 68.56 percent on a 30-day basis reflects a market that is trading the shares with considerable nervousness. The RSI at 45.9 — or 45.2 depending on the calculation — sits in neutral territory, leaving room for movement in either direction. If Wednesday's guidance disappoints or margins come under pressure, the recent gains could be quickly surrendered.

The Norges Bank reduction also remains an open question: it is not yet clear whether other large institutional holders will follow suit. And while the 200-day moving average at EUR 50.89 — roughly 26 percent below the current price — would serve as a long-term support floor, the distance to that level underscores how far the stock has fallen from its highs.

What Wednesday decides

The immediate catalyst is now a matter of hours away. The report and analyst call will determine whether the current recovery has staying power or merely represents a pause before further weakness. A credible defense of the EUR 1.5 billion AI revenue target, combined with evidence that institutional selling pressure has subsided, could see the stock gradually work its way back toward the 50-day average. Disappointing guidance, by contrast, risks a retracement toward the 200-day line. For a stock caught between a sector-wide demand rebound and its own recent technical damage, Wednesday's numbers will likely set the direction not just for the coming quarter, but for the weeks beyond.
