Infineon's AI Power Push Collides With a Wary Tape

Infineon finds itself in an awkward spot: the company is steadily stitching together partnerships aimed at the electricity-hungry data centers underpinning the artificial intelligence boom, yet the stock can barely muster a rally. The disconnect surfaced again this week, with the shares closing Tuesday at EUR 54.32 — almost exactly on their 200-day moving average of EUR 54.35.
That technical touchpoint matters because it frames the broader debate. On one side sits a business positioning itself squarely in structural growth markets; on the other, a market that keeps demanding hard proof of near-term orders before it will pay up.
A Street Divided
The analyst community is sending mixed signals. Morgan Stanley cut its rating from "Overweight" to "Equal-Weight" and trimmed its price target to EUR 65.00 from EUR 81.00, a downgrade that weighed on sentiment and complicates any quick rebound. Warburg Research moved the opposite way on September 7, upgrading the chipmaker from "Hold" to "Buy" with an EUR 84 target. Berenberg reaffirmed its buy recommendation on September 9 and pegs its target at EUR 100.
The gap between those calls and the current quote is striking. At EUR 55.30, the stock trades roughly 38 percent below its 52-week high, even though it has still gained 44 percent since the start of the year. For bulls, that spread signals considerable catch-up potential; for the more cautious camp, it reflects a cyclical industry that investors want to see deliver before they commit.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?
Betting on Data-Center Power
Where the two camps agree is that Infineon's operational moves deserve attention. Roughly two weeks ago the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Skeleton Technologies to develop highly efficient, resilient power supply solutions for modern data centers — AI facilities in particular. The plan combines Infineon's CoolSiC semiconductors with supercapacitors.
A parallel effort extends the company's collaboration with SolarEdge Technologies, focused on solid-state protection for 800-VDC systems. The aim is to improve electrical safeguarding for the next generation of servers, tackling the thorny problem of power distribution across increasingly complex infrastructure.
On the corporate-governance front, Infineon published a voting-rights notification under Section 40 of the German Securities Trading Act on September 11, covering the acquisition or disposal of voting instruments.
What Comes Next
Whether the strategy translates into fresh orders quickly is now the central question. Market participants are watching closely to see if the long-term average holds as support, or whether the analysts' more guarded stance continues to dictate the direction of the share price. The company's focus on energy-efficient solutions for high-performance computing should pay off over the medium term — but for now, patience is the price of admission.
