Infineon's 27-Kilowatt AI Server Power Design Lands as Buy-Side Giants Reshuffle Stakes

Infineon launched a 27kW three-phase power supply for AI racks and closed its C2i Semiconductors acquisition as it builds out data-center capacity.

A new reference design for the power-hungry racks behind artificial intelligence workloads has given Infineon Technologies a fresh talking point with data-center customers, arriving just as the German chipmaker's shares settle into a holding pattern ahead of its next earnings report.

The Munich-based semiconductor group unveiled a 27-kilowatt three-phase power supply on Thursday, engineered specifically for the demanding energy profiles of AI servers. Built to the OCP Open Rack V3 specification, the design is set to go on display at the OCP Global Summit from Monday through October 15. As compute-intensive applications push rack-level power density ever higher, Infineon is leaning on advanced power semiconductors to lift efficiency and curb the energy losses that plague large server farms.

The launch builds on a string of strategic moves in the same arena. Roughly a week ago, Infineon closed its acquisition of C2i Semiconductors, a Bengaluru-based developer of software-defined multiphase controllers and intelligent power stages for AI data centers. That team has now been folded into the company's in-house Power Systems Division. The new supply design ties Infineon's own power components to architectures aligned with open data-center platform standards.

Manufacturing capacity is expanding in parallel. Around 350 staff currently work at the company's new backend site in Bangkok, a headcount expected to climb toward roughly 1,000 as the first module ramps up. Press reports suggest these steps reinforce the chipmaker's global production and development footprint in key regions.

Beyond the Server Rack

Infineon's ambitions stretch past data centers. Last week the company also broadened its automotive lineup, introducing the TRAVEO T2G CYT4EN microcontroller on Tuesday for high-resolution instrument clusters and cockpit displays, available with immediate effect.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

On the quantum computing front, the group deepened a development partnership with ZuriQ AG aimed at advancing trapped-ion quantum hardware. The collaboration pairs ZuriQ's Penning microtrap architecture with Infineon's manufacturing, packaging and photonics expertise.

Institutional Investors Adjust Their Positions

Large shareholders have been recalibrating their exposure to the Munich group. The Goldman Sachs Group reported a total holding of 5.36% as of September 30, comprising 0.64% in voting rights from shares and 4.72% through financial instruments. Norway's central bank, acting on behalf of the country's finance ministry, separately disclosed a threshold notification dated October 2.

Analysts, meanwhile, remain constructive. Barclays reaffirmed its "Buy" rating on Tuesday and set a price target of EUR 90.00.

A Sector-Wide Pullback, Not a Company Story

Broader market forces have been the dominant driver of recent price action. Rising capital market yields and firmer commodity prices have weighed noticeably on international technology markets in recent days, and Infineon was not immune. On Wednesday and Thursday, the DAX-listed stock came under pressure amid sector-wide profit-taking in semiconductor and AI names, mirroring similar losses on US exchanges. Notably, no company-specific negative news accompanied the dip.

By Friday the shares had steadied, closing the session up 1.0% at EUR 59.01. That leaves the stock with a gain of 56% since the start of the year, though it still trades 34% below its 52-week high of EUR 89.67.

With the next scheduled corporate event on the calendar, management has entered a quiet period for investor contacts until results are published. Market participants expect meaningful fundamental catalysts next month, when fourth-quarter figures for fiscal year 2026 are due on November 10.
