Infineon Rides Micron-Led Chip Rally as Bangkok Plant and $1.12 Billion Divestment Reshape Its Playbook

Infineon rose 7.8% to EUR 64.63 as Micron's upbeat outlook lifted chip stocks, while the company opened a Thai backend site and sold its memory unit.

A wave of optimism from the US memory-chip sector washed over European semiconductors on Friday, and Infineon was among the biggest beneficiaries. The Munich-based chipmaker's shares climbed 7.8% to EUR 64.63, part of a broad advance that also lifted peers including ASML and STMicroelectronics.

The catalyst came from across the Atlantic, where Micron Technology delivered upbeat quarterly figures and an encouraging demand outlook for AI-related memory. That combination, first reported by dpa-AFX, reignited investors' appetite for chip stocks generally. Over a rolling seven-day window, Infineon's gain now stands at 13%.

Even after that run, the stock remains 28% below its 52-week high — a reminder that the recovery is still working against a deep prior drawdown.

Thailand Welcomes a New Backend Hub

While the market was busy repricing the sector, Infineon was putting the finishing touches on a significant operational milestone. On Thursday, the company inaugurated a backend manufacturing site in Samut Prakan, near Bangkok, alongside Thailand's prime minister.

Management framed the facility as a step toward a more resilient global production network, with the potential to become one of Infineon's largest backend plants over time. Roughly 350 employees are on site at launch, and headcount is expected to reach about 1,000 as the first building ramps up.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

Wiring Data Centers for the AI Power Crunch

The Thai opening is only one strand of a broader repositioning. On September 29, Infineon struck a collaboration with Eaton to deploy silicon carbide technology in solid-state transformers for 800-VDC data-center power grids — an effort aimed at raising efficiency at high direct voltages and cutting transmission losses. Infineon supplies the silicon carbide power semiconductors used in Eaton's MVSST 2.0 platform.

That deal builds on an expanded partnership with SolarEdge announced on September 9, under which the two companies are co-developing solid-state protection technology for the same 800-VDC level.

Infineon is simultaneously pruning where it no longer sees an edge. On September 16, it agreed to sell its NOR Flash and F-RAM memory operations to Winbond in a transaction valued at USD 1.12 billion. Subject to regulatory approval, both sides are targeting a close in the second half of 2027.

Jefferies Stays Bullish, With a Caveat

Analyst sentiment has largely kept pace with the operational news. On September 30, Jefferies reaffirmed its buy rating on Infineon with a price target of EUR 96. Analyst Janardan Menon pointed to persistently strong demand for semiconductor solutions as the basis for his stance.

His view is not without nuance: Menon expects little further upside to company guidance and regards the fourth quarter as a possible cyclical peak. Even so, he continues to rank Infineon among his preferred sector picks for fiscal 2027. Management, for its part, has been highlighting the growing revenue opportunity in AI at recent investor events, according to media reports.

November 10 Looms Large

The next hard data point arrives in a matter of weeks. Infineon has scheduled the release of its fiscal 2026 annual results for November 10 — a date that will test whether the recent rally, the Thai expansion, and the AI power narrative can hold together against the sobering note of a possible cycle top.
