Infineon shares closed Friday at EUR 51.54, down 2.9%, as a broad retreat in technology stocks swept through European chip names at the end of the trading week. The Munich-based semiconductor group was caught in a sell-off that began in Asia and on Wall Street, where surprisingly hot US inflation data revived fears of persistently higher interest rates, according to reports from Reuters and dpa-AFX.

The downdraft hit the most technology-heavy benchmarks in Japan and South Korea particularly hard before spilling over into European semiconductor stocks. Growth-oriented sectors tend to be most sensitive to rate anxiety, since higher discount rates erode the present value of future earnings. Worries about stretched valuations and rising borrowing costs had already been weighing on chip stocks in the US and Asia, and those concerns followed the trading week into Europe.

Despite Friday's slide, Infineon's stock remains up 37% since the start of the year, leaving investors to weigh whether macroeconomic turbulence can durably dent the company's operating momentum.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

Silicon Carbide Supply Secured Through Wolfspeed Deal

Away from the market turmoil, management has been laying groundwork for the years ahead. On October 15, Infineon and Wolfspeed signed a multi-year agreement for the supply of 200-millimeter silicon carbide wafers. The contract is designed to support Infineon's shift from 150-millimeter substrates to the larger format while broadening its sourcing base for strategically important semiconductor materials. Silicon carbide is regarded as a key component for energy-efficient power electronics in electric mobility and industrial systems.

On the acquisition front, the chipmaker completed its purchase of C2i Semiconductors on October 5, with Infineon acting as buyer in the transaction.

Product Offensive Targets AI, Robotics and Data Centers

Infineon is also pressing ahead on the product side. On October 14, the company announced its presence at electronica, which runs from November 10 to 13, where it will showcase solutions built around "Physical AI" for robotics, mobility, edge devices and data centers. Earlier, on October 8, the group unveiled a 27-kW three-phase power supply solution developed specifically for the power architectures of AI servers.

Investors will get their next hard look at the business on November 10, when Infineon is scheduled to publish results for the fourth quarter and the full 2026 fiscal year, according to preliminary planning. Before that, the company hosts its OktoberTech Silicon Valley 2026 event in California on October 22.
