IBM's Quantum Win Lifts Shares Above Key Technical Level as Analysts Split on Turnaround

IBM shares rose 2.6% to EUR 202.10, reclaiming their 50-day moving average after a DARPA quantum selection, as analysts split on the stock.

A late-week rally has pushed IBM shares back above a closely watched technical marker, even as Wall Street remains divided over how quickly the company's newer bets will translate into revenue.

The stock added 2.6% on Wednesday to close at EUR 202.10, climbing back over its 50-day moving average of EUR 201.77. The advance stood out against a broadly weaker session for US equities, where the Nasdaq Composite shed 1.3% amid a pullback in AI-linked chip names, according to AP. Media coverage noted IBM moving higher while much of the technology sector slid.

The catalyst was IBM's selection for Phase C of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative. That third stage focuses on assessing viable paths toward fault-tolerant quantum computing — a validation of the company's in-house development program. IBM is being evaluated alongside specialists including Atom Computing and IonQ, with the company targeting 2029 for its first fault-tolerant system, dubbed Quantum Starling.

Analyst Views Diverge

Sentiment on the analyst side is far from uniform. Yorkville Ives issued an Outperform rating on Tuesday with a USD 275 price target, offering a bullish counterpoint to more cautious voices. Truist Securities, by contrast, launched coverage with a Hold rating and a USD 240 target. Analyst Arvind Ramnani acknowledged IBM's structurally strong position in enterprise computing but flagged near-term execution risks, adding that it remains unclear when corporate spending on artificial intelligence will convert into meaningful IBM orders. Bernstein has also stayed on the sidelines, assigning a Market Perform rating and a USD 230 target.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IBM?

The mixed reception follows a bruising stretch for the shares. IBM has shed 22% since the start of the year, a decline driven largely by a sharp selloff after its second-quarter 2026 results, when the stock dropped more than a fifth. In that quarter, IBM reported revenue of USD 17.2 billion and adjusted earnings per share of USD 2.93. Profit grew, but top-line growth fell short of Wall Street's consensus estimates — a miss that has left investors increasingly skeptical about the company's near-term growth trajectory.

Cloud and Security Push

While the market weighs those concerns, IBM is pressing ahead on several commercial fronts. On Wednesday it unveiled "IBM Ready for SAP Solutions," a package aimed at helping mid-sized and fast-growing businesses modernize their ERP systems in the cloud. The company cited Volumetric Building Companies as a reference customer, noting the firm cut its operational cycle times by 50% using SAP Cloud ERP.

A day earlier, IBM and subsidiary Red Hat reported progress on securing open-source software. Their Lightwell tool uncovered and remediated more than 400 previously unknown vulnerabilities in widely used Java libraries. The company has also been reshaping its portfolio, partnering with OpenAI on secure enterprise solutions while divesting peripheral assets — most recently selling a blockchain patent portfolio spanning over 680 patent families to Circle in a bid to concentrate resources.

Earnings on the Horizon

Attention now turns to IBM's third-quarter 2026 results, scheduled for an October 21 conference call. The report should shed light on how the cloud, software, and consulting initiatives are flowing through to the company's financials — and whether they can shift the narrative that has weighed on the stock through the year.
