IBM's Chicago Quantum Debut Anchors a Busy Week of Dividends, Deals and a Flat Tape
Published on 11/08/2026 at 18:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deIBM put its first quantum computer in Illinois on display Friday, a Quantum System Two housed in the Hyde Park Labs in Chicago and driven by the company's Nighthawk chip. The University of Chicago is hosting the machine, which IBM says is already operational at that site. A move to the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park is planned once that location is finished, with the system eventually settling into the park's National Quantum Algorithm Center. IBM, the university, the state of Illinois and the quantum park all took part in the unveiling.
The Chicago installation sits alongside a second quantum effort disclosed earlier in the week. Reuters reported Thursday that IBM, AMD and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have launched a joint development platform linking IBM quantum machines to the lab's Umbra supercomputer, which runs on AMD processors. The Nighthawk processor, carrying 120 qubits, is among the IBM systems wired into the platform. The partners are aiming the collaboration at quantum error correction, with a scientifically relevant quantum computer targeted for 2028.
Evercore Holds Its Ground
Evercore ISI reaffirmed an "Outperform" rating and a $275.00 price target on the stock Friday, according to media reports. The shares slipped 0.1% in Friday's session. That modest move followed a broader selloff in technology names on Thursday, which media accounts tied to weakness led by AI stocks rather than to any fresh IBM-specific news.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IBM?
Income investors have a date to circle. IBM declared a quarterly dividend of $1.69 per common share on October 21, payable December 10, 2026, to shareholders of record as of November 10, 2026.
On the partnerships front, IBM and the United States Tennis Association renewed their agreement on October 28, a five-year extension that keeps IBM as the official AI and cloud partner of the US Open through 2031. IBM reported more than 270 million interactions across the tournament's digital platforms in 2026, and the renewal extends a relationship that predates the new term.
