IBM Pushes Agent Identity Into watsonx Orchestrate as CFOs Take the AI Reins

IBM is betting that the next phase of enterprise AI will be won not on model capability but on control. The company used a preview of its Agent Identity feature inside watsonx Orchestrate — unveiled on September 21 — to stake out that position, promising software-based agents distinguishable, traceable identities so that accountability and oversight hold up when autonomous programs execute tasks without a human in the loop.
The governance push arrives alongside fresh evidence of how far corporate practice lags corporate ambition. A global study from the IBM Institute for Business Value and Oxford Economics, fielded between February and April among 1,500 executives across 33 regions and 26 industries, found that 62 percent of CFOs say their remit has already expanded into company-wide technology or AI strategy. Yet just 6 percent describe their finance organizations as fully prepared for a shift in which AI is embedded in day-to-day operations.
From guardians of stability to drivers of transformation
The role itself is being redefined. According to IBM finance chief Jim Kavanaugh, CFOs are evolving from custodians of stability into engines of transformation, and must tie AI strategy directly to investment, operating models and measurable business outcomes. Expectations point to further expansion: 56 percent of finance leaders anticipate growing responsibility for both financial and ethical guardrails around technology deployment by 2030.
The payoff for companies whose CFOs take a leading role is measurable. Those organizations approved new initiatives roughly 15 percent faster, and between 2022 and 2024 they posted revenue growth 23 percent higher than comparable peers.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IBM?
IBM is applying the same playbook internally. By redesigning processes from quote generation through to cash collection, the company reached a touchless automation rate of 90 percent, lifting internal productivity by 60 percent and accelerating cash inflow. Since 2023, IBM says internal automation has delivered productivity improvements worth USD 4.5 billion. The operating results showed through in the second quarter of 2026, when the group booked revenue of USD 17.16 billion and net income of USD 2.17 billion.
Guardrails, and the workforce's doubts
Demand for binding limits on automated systems is not confined to the boardroom. A separate Institute for Business Value survey published September 21 found that 60 percent of employees worry AI tools could erode their own skills, with the decline of critical thinking cited as the principal concern. For vendors like IBM, that raises the bar on embedding AI into existing work environments in ways that preserve both acceptance and control.
The company also published a technical paper on Monday outlining how to establish reliable governance structures for the next generation of autonomous AI agents — a companion piece to the Agent Identity preview.
Budgets shift, and the outlook feels it
Changed customer priorities are visible in hardware and infrastructure spending. More than a month ago, weakness in IBM's infrastructure business laid bare the structural shift in IT budgets. Media reports at the time said the company modestly trimmed its expectations for currency-adjusted revenue growth, after observing that many enterprise customers were funneling funds primarily into building specialized AI data centers rather than continuing conventional IT projects at the usual scale.
Markets took the recent announcements and product initiatives in stride. IBM shares closed yesterday at EUR 194.40, a slight gain on the day. In German trading today the stock changed hands at EUR 194.66.
The longer view is less forgiving. The shares are down 25 percent since the start of the year, leaving them well below earlier annual highs, and the price sits 12 percent under its 200-day moving average — a reflection of investors' caution as valuation questions hang over the technology sector and buyers wait for tangible returns on AI budgets.
