IBM rolled out a self-hosted deployment option for its agent-based software development platform, IBM Bob, on Thursday, a move aimed squarely at large corporate and government customers that operate under tight security mandates. The same week, the company confirmed that Frank Baker, co-founder and managing partner of private equity firm Siris Capital, will join its Board of Directors.

Under the expanded setup, IBM Bob can now run inside local data centers, private cloud environments, sovereign clouds, and fully isolated air-gapped systems with no external network connection. The company is courting sectors that want to bring AI agents into their development and application modernization workflows but face regulatory limits or strict internal data protection rules. Because the platform no longer requires a link to public clouds, engineering teams in regulated industries can use its tools without moving corporate data outside their own perimeter — a pitch built around data sovereignty and internal governance.

Board Grows to 14 as Baker Takes a Committee Seat

Baker's appointment took effect on October 1. To accommodate the addition, IBM amended its corporate bylaws and enlarged the board to 14 members. According to a mandatory filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Baker will also sit on the board's nominating and governance committee. On Wednesday, the company separately reported deferred stock awards for several directors under its board compensation plan — arrangements that tie part of their pay directly to IBM's future share performance.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IBM?

The governance changes follow IBM's September 24 acquisition of Logiq Consulting, a British cybersecurity advisory firm. The deal is meant to deepen the capabilities of IBM Consulting in IT security and government technology solutions for regulated customers and the public sector. Management did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction. A study published Wednesday by IBM's own Institute for Business Value added another data point to the company's enterprise pitch, highlighting the growing sway chief financial officers hold over corporate technology investment decisions.

Shares Slip as Mainframe and Guidance Concerns Linger

The operational news failed to lift the stock into the weekend. IBM shares closed Friday down 1.5% at EUR 197.78, with media reports pointing to the earlier cut to the company's 2026 outlook and a weaker performance in the IBM Z mainframe division as the drags on sentiment. The decline extends a longer stretch of underperformance: the stock is down 24% since the start of the year.

Investors now have their next marker in sight. IBM is scheduled to report third-quarter 2026 results on October 21 after the close of U.S. trading, according to media reports — the next significant test for a share that has spent much of the year searching for a floor.
