Helus Pharma's New CEO Steps Into the Spotlight as Phase 3 Depression Trial Enrollment Closes
Published on 08/11/2026 at 01:40 | Redaktion boerse-global.deWhen Michael Halstead takes the stage at Canaccord Genuity's 46th Annual Growth Conference in Boston next Wednesday, he won't just be introducing himself to investors — he'll be introducing a company at a pivotal inflection point. The newly appointed chief executive of Helus Pharma, the biotech formerly known as Cybin, is expected to lay out the strategic roadmap for a pipeline that has suddenly moved from preclinical promise to late-stage reality.
Halstead's arrival on August 4 came with immediate weight. The 25-year pharmaceutical industry veteran previously served as president of Intra-Cellular Therapies, where he helped shepherd the depression drug CAPLYTA to market and later guided the company's $14.6 billion sale to Johnson & Johnson. His transaction pedigree also includes overseeing a $3 billion acquisition and an $8.5 billion divestiture during his tenure at Warner Chilcott. For a company preparing the commercial infrastructure for its lead asset, the hire signals intent.
That asset, HLP003, is a deuterated psilocin analogue targeting major depressive disorder. The FDA has granted it Breakthrough Therapy designation, and on July 21 the company announced it had closed patient enrollment early for the Phase 3 APPROACH study. The trial has enrolled 223 participants who are stable on antidepressants, with a placebo-controlled design measuring changes in depressive symptoms over six weeks. Topline data is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The clinical momentum doesn't stop there. A second Phase 3 study, EMBRACE, is still recruiting, alongside a long-term extension trial. Earlier Phase 2 results offered a compelling preview: twelve months after just two doses, 71 percent of subjects achieved remission. Meanwhile, HLP004, a candidate for generalized anxiety disorder, is advancing through Phase 2.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Cybin (Helus Pharma)?
The market has taken notice, though Monday's session offered a reminder that biotech rallies rarely move in straight lines. Shares closed at $10.34, down 10.94 percent from the prior session, a pullback that traders attributed partly to profit-taking following a strong run. The stock remains up 26.41 percent year-to-date, and Friday's close of $11.61 sat just 0.09 percent below the 52-week high. That rapid ascent has pushed the relative strength index to 85.0, a reading that suggests the equity is technically overbought.
Analyst sentiment, however, remains firmly constructive. Wells Fargo reaffirmed its "Overweight" rating with a $16.00 price target on July 27, and some market observers see considerably more upside, with media reports citing targets as high as $42.00. The company's market capitalization currently stands at roughly €622.45 million, with institutional investors holding approximately 17.94 percent of outstanding shares.
The balance sheet received a boost in late June when Helus closed a capital raise that generated gross proceeds of about $50 million, issuing over 10 million new shares at $4.85 apiece. That financial cushion, combined with the completed APPROACH enrollment and the fresh leadership, gives the company runway as it approaches what could be a defining data readout.
For Halstead, Wednesday's fireside chat in Boston represents an early opportunity to make his case to institutional investors — not just about the science, but about the commercial strategy that will determine whether HLP003's breakthrough designation translates into a marketable therapy. The recruitment update and data timelines he provides will be scrutinized closely, but the broader question investors are asking is simpler: can the company convert its clinical milestones into the kind of valuation that its most bullish backers envision? The fourth quarter will provide the first real answer.
