Heidelberg Materials has pencilled in November 4, 2026, for its third-quarter trading update, a date that now carries extra weight given the crosscurrents running through Europe's building-materials sector. Producers spent the summer months wrestling with the challenge of pushing through price increases fast enough to offset persistent cost inflation, while geopolitical uncertainty and unfavourable weather conditions weighed on demand across key markets.

RBC Moves to Outperform, Trims Price Target

Analysts nonetheless single out the German group as a relative bright spot. On Friday, October 9, RBC Capital Markets lifted its rating on Heidelberg Materials from "Sector Perform" to "Outperform," even as the Canadian bank cut its price target from EUR 217 to EUR 211. RBC continues to count the stock among its preferred names in the industry, reasoning that the company should absorb the sector's operational pressures more resiliently than its peers.

The market has been less forgiving. At a level of EUR 141.95, the shares sit 21% below their 200-day moving average of EUR 180.82. The stock slipped 0.4% yesterday to close at EUR 142.25. Since the start of the year, the decline amounts to 36%, leaving investors hungry for hard evidence that margins are holding up against sustained cost pressure.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberg Materials?

Scandinavian Aggregates and Asphalt in the Frame

Beyond the quarterly numbers, Heidelberg Materials is pressing ahead with the reshaping of its portfolio. Roughly a week ago, the company agreed to acquire the Swedish and Norwegian aggregates and asphalt operations of construction group NCC AB. The deal carries an enterprise value of about SEK 5.5 billion and covers 106 aggregates sites along with 44 hot-mix asphalt plants.

The carve-up is part of a broader split of NCC Industry, which is valued at SEK 8.2 billion in total. While Heidelberg Materials takes the Swedish and Norwegian businesses, the Danish and Finnish units go to CRH. Completion remains subject to merger-control approvals and is expected in the second half of 2027.

Buyback Wrapped Up, Balance Sheet Reset

On the capital side, management drew a line under its share repurchase programme about two weeks ago, closing the third and final tranche on schedule. The buyback carried a total volume of up to EUR 1.2 billion; in the last tranche alone, 2,739,278 treasury shares were acquired for roughly EUR 448 million. Since the programme's completion, the stock has given back 2.6%.

The November 4 trading update, followed by the analyst call, should shed light on how much of the cost inflation the group has actually managed to pass through to customers, and what management expects for the closing quarter. With the Scandinavian acquisition still awaiting regulatory clearance, investors will get a fresh read on the operating picture while the Nordic expansion works its way through the approval process.
