Heidelberg pushes into packaging, labels and software as its stock falls 30% this year; Gallus gets an interim CEO and manroland service integration continues.

Heidelberg Druckmaschinen is pushing a broad realignment that reaches well past its traditional press-building business, extending into packaging, label printing, digital workflows and service revenue. Investors have yet to be convinced. The stock has shed 30 percent since the start of the year, closing Tuesday at EUR 1.41, with a market capitalization of EUR 436.73 million.

The share price decline — put at 31 percent by some measures — reflects market skepticism toward a structural overhaul that is still working its way through the company. What matters for a durable recovery, in the eyes of the market, is how quickly the new partnerships and software offerings translate into measurable profitability gains.

A Leadership Change at Gallus

A key piece of that overhaul sits inside the Gallus Group, the label-printing specialist. Michael Bsirske is set to take over as interim CEO of the group on November 1, 2026. Dario Urbinati will step down as CEO on the same date and is slated to assume the chairmanship of the board of directors at Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG on January 1, 2027. Uwe Boerner already joined on October 1, 2026, taking charge of worldwide sales.

Demand for the subsidiary's technology continues to hold up. NextGen Label Group placed an order with Heidelberg Druckmaschinen for a second Gallus Labelmaster 440. The eight-color machine is scheduled for installation at the Cohoes site in early 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberger Druckmaschinen?

Pharma Logistics and a Software Win in Istanbul

Beyond labels, Heidelberg is advancing its packaging business. Roughly a week ago, the company agreed a partnership with the pfenning group, announced on September 30. The two aim to combine printing, packaging and pharmaceutical logistics, developing joint offerings for pharmaceutical packaging production — a regulated growth market with demanding quality standards.

On the digital side, Heidelberg is strengthening its Prinect platform internationally. Turkish packaging and label printer Sade Ofset, based in Istanbul, has adopted Prinect Production as the central control architecture for its operations. The system governs prepress, presses and production planning. Following a comprehensive modernization of its machine fleet, Sade Ofset plans to link the setup into its higher-level management system. The company is also investing in a Speedmaster CX 104 to expand its packaging printing capabilities.

Service Revenue and the manroland Integration

The margin-rich service and maintenance business carries particular weight for industrial equipment makers during tougher economic phases. Recurring service revenue steadies cash flow and reduces dependence on cyclical machine orders.

Heidelberg moved on that front roughly two weeks ago, integrating manroland sheetfed's service business to bolster customer support. The company says the integration is proceeding on schedule, with the main steps to be completed within 18 months.

Hybrid Production on Display

The Gallus Group also said on September 22 that it will take part in the LOUPE India trade fair. Closer to home, the SHIFT in-house exhibition will feature hybrid production demonstrations on October 7.

Behind these initiatives lies a deeper shift in the global printing industry. As demand in classic commercial printing changes, automated processes and specialized markets are gaining ground. For Heidelberg, the priority is binding customers more closely through end-to-end workflows and long-term services — a strategy the company is betting will stabilize its industrial base even as the stock languishes.
