The most valuable thing Healwell AI owns right now might not be its AI platform at all. It's a stake in Elon Musk's rocket company.

The Toronto-based healthcare technology firm disclosed Thursday after the US market close that its indirect position in SpaceX was worth roughly C$23 million as of June 30, based on prevailing market prices and exchange rates at the reporting date. That marks a dramatic appreciation from the C$4.6 million book value recorded just three months earlier, at the end of March. The holding traces back to an investment in xAI Corp. in May 2024; SpaceX absorbed xAI in February 2026.

There is, however, a catch. The shares remain subject to a lock-up period of up to six months following the IPO, and Healwell has said it intends to monetize the position once those restrictions lapse, channeling the proceeds into its balance sheet and liquidity position. For shareholders watching a stock that has shed more than 60 percent from its 52-week high, that eventual unlock represents perhaps the clearest catalyst on the horizon.

The Operational Picture Is Less Straightforward

Beneath the headline numbers, the quarter told a more complicated story. Revenue from continuing operations came in at US$33.0 million, essentially flat against the US$33.2 million posted in the same period last year. Management attributed the slight dip to one-time consulting fees that had boosted the prior-year quarter but did not recur. Media reports indicated the loss came in narrower than analysts had anticipated, while revenue marginally missed expectations.

The profitability picture shifted depending on which metric one examined. Gross profit slipped 4 percent to US$17.9 million from US$18.7 million, with the gross margin easing from 56 to 54 percent. Healwell pointed to a shift in the Data Science & AI segment's revenue mix toward lower-margin, project-based life sciences work.

Yet on an IFRS basis, the company swung to a net profit of US$6.4 million from continuing operations, reversing a US$4.1 million net loss in the prior-year period. The adjusted EBITDA figure, however, told a less flattering tale: US$1.1 million, down from US$2.3 million a year earlier. The company noted that the prior-year comparison had been flattered by stronger margins in the AI & Data Science segment, which at the time still included the now-divested Mutuo stake.

Cash Flow Emerges as the Bright Spot

Where the numbers genuinely improved was in internal financing. For the first half of 2026, Healwell generated positive operating cash flow of US$4.5 million — a swing of US$14.3 million versus the corresponding period last year. Management credited the growing efficiency of its combined operations following the Orion Health acquisition. The company also confirmed it remained in full compliance with all covenants on its existing credit facilities as of June 30.

That cash generation matters because it demonstrates earnings power independent of the stagnant revenue line. A growing stream of internally generated funds gives the company more room to maneuver without tapping external financing — a consideration that carries added weight given the stock's extended decline.

Healwell also reaffirmed its ambition to reach an adjusted EBITDA margin of roughly 10 percent by year-end, driven by continued operating leverage across the platform.

Market Remains Unimpressed

The market's response to the quarterly release was decidedly cool. Shares closed Friday at EUR 0.4190, down 4.23 percent, leaving the stock just 14.98 percent above its 52-week low of EUR 0.3644, set in late February. The shares now trade 22.29 percent below their 200-day moving average — a technical signal that the medium-term downtrend persists despite the operational improvements in cash flow and cost discipline.

The year-to-date decline stands at 20.94 percent, and the stock sits roughly 60 percent below its 52-week high of EUR 1.05, reached on August 13, 2025. For now, the flat revenue trajectory appears to weigh more heavily on investor sentiment than the improved cash generation or the valuable SpaceX position sitting on the balance sheet.

Healwell AI at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Management, including CEO James Lee, President Dr. Alexander Dobranowski, and CFO Anthony Lam, walked through the results in a Friday morning earnings call at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

Governance and What Comes Next

At the annual meeting in late June, shareholders representing approximately 66.83 percent of voting shares approved all resolutions put forward, including fixing the board at seven members, re-electing all directors, reappointing Deloitte as auditor, and extending the rolling stock option plan covering 10 percent of shares.

Looking ahead, Healwell plans to present results from a multi-province AI pilot project at the AMIA Symposium in Dallas in November. Whether the prospect of fresh capital from the SpaceX monetization can reignite investor interest may only become clear once the lock-up expires and the company announces concrete steps to convert those shares into cash.
