The yellow metal has climbed to its strongest level since mid-May, touching $4,659 an ounce on Monday before extending gains to $4,707.60, up 1.0 percent on the day. Over the past seven trading sessions, the advance has compounded to 5.2 percent — the third consecutive weekly gain for bullion.

What's driving the move is not the usual haven narrative. The catalyst traces directly to a decision by the US Treasury to double its buyback program for long-dated government bonds with maturities of 10 to 30 years, lifting the volume from $2 billion to at least $4 billion. The announcement pushed Treasury yields lower and weighed on the dollar, a combination that historically funnels capital into hard assets. Justin Lin, an analyst at Global X ETFs, framed the dynamic in stark terms: macro investors now see a currency-debasement story with significant room to rotate into precious metals.

A Debt Milestone Adds Fuel

The Treasury's maneuver arrives alongside a symbolic threshold: US government debt has for the first time crossed $40 trillion. That figure, flagged in market commentary, reinforces gold's appeal as a hedge against currency risk at a moment when Washington's fiscal trajectory is drawing renewed scrutiny.

The structural picture, however, extends well beyond the latest policy headlines. The World Gold Council reported Sunday that 89 percent of central banks surveyed expect to expand their gold reserves over the next twelve months. That expectation is already translating into action: Poland's central bank has overtaken the Netherlands and Turkey in total holdings through substantial purchases, placing it among the world's ten largest official gold holders.

On the demand side, the Council also noted a stabilization in India's gold market, supported by a recovery in jewelry demand and rising imports ahead of the national festival season. Supply, meanwhile, remains constrained — the Council puts annual mine production growth at just 1.5 percent against global demand approaching 5,000 tonnes. That mismatch between sluggish supply growth and broad-based demand from central banks, jewelry buyers, and investors forms the fundamental backbone of the current price action.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Gold?

Analysts Chase the Move Higher

Monday brought a wave of upward revisions from major houses. UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo lifted his 12-month target to $5,400, citing the return of structural price drivers, foremost among them the expanding US debt burden. Goldman Sachs has set its end-2026 target at $4,900 but cautioned that surging demand for call options could amplify price swings in both directions. Morgan Stanley raised its 2027 forecast to above $5,000 after its original fourth-quarter 2026 target of $4,450 was reached ahead of schedule.

Miners Outrun the Metal

The equity side of the gold trade is telling its own story. The NYSE Arca Gold BUGS index has advanced roughly 38 percent over the past four weeks, far outpacing physical gold's approximately 15 percent gain over the same stretch. That outperformance is widely read as a sign of broad-based participation rather than purely speculative positioning, given that mining operators carry operational leverage to rising metal prices.

Institutional flows are reinforcing the trend: gold-backed funds have attracted inflows that pushed holdings to their highest level since January.

Silver, Platinum Follow the Precious-Metal Playbook

Silver is consolidating near $69 an ounce after completing a base-building phase, with traders eyeing the psychologically significant $70 level. The metal's recent history underscores its volatility — it hit an all-time high above $121 in January before a sharp correction — yet many market observers still expect a sustained move back above $100, underpinned by persistent supply deficits and growing industrial demand.

Platinum, meanwhile, is up about one percent on the day to roughly $1,762, with a weekly gain near six percent and a monthly advance exceeding seven percent. BNP Paribas analysts described the move as a confirmed trend reversal. Beyond the broader precious-metal sentiment, platinum is drawing support from its role in the hydrogen economy — it serves as a critical catalyst in PEM fuel cells and electrolysis for green hydrogen production. Upcoming Euro-7 emissions standards, which require stricter limits and tend to increase platinum loading per catalytic converter, add a structural demand driver.

The Week Ahead: Policy Signals Take Center Stage

Wednesday's PCE data — the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge — will likely set the tone for the precious-metals complex. That release is followed by the Jackson Hole symposium, the first major public platform for new Fed Chair Warsh, whose commentary could move markets meaningfully.

For gold specifically, the combination of central bank buying momentum, persistent concerns over US fiscal policy, and fresh analyst upgrades suggests the rally retains near-term momentum — even as Goldman Sachs flags the risk of heightened volatility from the options market. The week's key inflection points, however, may not be found on trading screens at all, but in the policy statements emanating from Washington and, for other commodities, Brussels.
