Japanese Shipyard Investigated After Fatal Tanker Fire
Authorities in Shizuoka, Japan, began an on-site investigation at the Kanasashi Heavy Industries facility on August 24, following a fire that broke out three days earlier aboard an oil tanker under construction.
One worker, a Chinese national in his 40s, died in the blaze, while nine others suffered minor injuries. ExxonMobil Halts Production After FPSO Fire
ExxonMobil suspended operations at the Liza Unity floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel offshore Guyana on August 24, after a small fire was detected in the laundry room of the living quarters.
The fire was extinguished quickly and all personnel were reported safe, but the company halted crude oil loading and production as a precaution. The vessel, which has a production capacity of approximately 220,000 barrels per day (bpd), has been in operation since February 2022.
Guyana's Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed it was notified after heat detectors were activated, and said discussions with ExxonMobil regarding safety protocols would continue. The disruption comes as Guyana's total production reached 895,000 bpd in May and 869,000 bpd in June.
The company is currently preparing its fifth FPSO, the Errea Wittu, for a scheduled start in the final quarter of 2026.
Steel Plant Fire Claims Three Lives in India
In Jharkhand, India, a two-member team has been tasked with investigating a fire at the Maa Chinnamastika Ispat steel plant in the Ramgarh district. The incident, which occurred on August 24, resulted in the deaths of three engineers.
Following the tragedy, the families of the victims each received Rs 31 lakh in compensation, which included a base payment and funds for cremation services.
