The incident caused significant disruption to local transport, with Grand Parade partially blocked and sections of the seafront road closed to traffic.

The pier previously suffered major damage on July 30, 2014, when a fire destroyed roughly one-third of the Victorian-era structure. Sunday's emergency came during a weekend of heightened safety concerns across East Sussex.
On Saturday, organisers of the Bournefest music festival on the Eastbourne seafront announced a delay to the event's opening due to poor weather. The local community has also been responding to a fatal incident earlier in the weekend at the Big Church Festival in Wiston Park.
Fatal Incident Under Investigation
On Friday, August 28, a 41-year-old pastor from Eastbourne, Robert Guanco, died after a large wooden sign collapsed during high winds. Four other people were hospitalised. In a separate emergency on Saturday afternoon, fire crews in nearby Brighton evacuated residents from a flat on Warleigh Road after a basement fire spread through the first and second floors. All occupants were accounted for by late afternoon.
