Evotec Shares Jump on RBC Backing, but Guidance Stays in the Red

Evotec investors got a double dose of encouragement on Tuesday, yet neither came with an upgrade to the company's own outlook. RBC Capital Markets reaffirmed its "Outperform" rating on the German drug-discovery specialist, keeping a EUR 10 price target, while preliminary figures for the first nine months of 2026 came in ahead of consensus. The stock climbed 9.5% over the session, with dpa-AFX tying the advance to the early numbers.
The endorsement from RBC analyst Charles Weston rests on a straightforward observation: both revenue and operating profit for the third quarter exceeded analyst expectations and improved on the prior three-month period. That sequential progress gives the latest trading a friendlier gloss. It does not, however, come with a raised forecast — Evotec has left its full-year targets untouched.
What the Preliminary Numbers Show
Reported group revenue for the nine months through September reached roughly EUR 465.0 million, accompanied by an adjusted group EBITDA of about EUR -42.8 million. The figures are preliminary and unaudited. They beat what the market had penciled in, but the adjusted operating line remains firmly negative — a distinction that matters when weighing the RBC note against the company's own messaging.
Evotec attributes the gap versus consensus largely to the timing of analyst estimates rather than to any structural shift in the business. In plain terms, the surprise reflects how expectations were distributed across the calendar, not a sudden lift in underlying earning power. Investors reading the beat as a signal of stronger full-year performance would be getting ahead of the evidence.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evotec?
The Guidance That Still Sets the Bar
Management continues to guide for full-year 2026 revenue of EUR 570 million to EUR 610 million, with adjusted EBITDA of EUR -70 million to EUR -105 million. On a constant-currency basis, the company puts revenue at EUR 595 million to EUR 635 million and the adjusted EBITDA figure at roughly EUR -60 million to EUR -90 million. The reported and currency-adjusted ranges belong to the same confirmed outlook and should not be conflated.
That unchanged framework is the product of a July downgrade. According to Reuters, Evotec trimmed its annual targets at the time because of delayed milestone payments and partnerships that closed later than planned. Confirming the reduced range therefore signals continuity with that lower bar — not a return to earlier, more ambitious expectations.
Two Messages Running in Parallel
The result is a market narrative with two threads that pull in different directions. On one side, RBC's vote of confidence and the better-than-expected quarterly figures justify a more constructive reading of recent trading. On the other, the adjusted operating loss persists and the annual outlook still points to red ink, so the beat cannot simply be extrapolated into an improved full-year picture.
Evotec at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The next hard data point arrives on November 5, when Evotec is scheduled to publish its complete third-quarter and nine-month results. Until then, the takeaway from the RBC note stays deliberately narrow: the bank credits the company with beating expectations, while Evotec itself leaves its annual guidance exactly where it was. A genuine re-rating would require improvement that goes beyond the timing of consensus estimates — something the preliminary figures have not delivered.
