The numbers that matter most to Evotec right now have nothing to do with the half-year results published over the weekend. They concern a promise: 20 to 30 percent of the €75 million in structural savings targeted under the Horizon transformation program, to be delivered by the end of this year. Whether management can make good on that commitment will determine if Europe's once-high-flying drug discovery partner can slow its loss spiral — or watch it accelerate.

Investors are already voting with their feet. The stock closed Tuesday at €3.16, down 2.5 percent and just above the €3.15 mark that represents the previous 52-week trough. The gap to the November 5 high of €7.75 now stands at 59 percent. Year-to-date, the shares have shed 42 percent, and the technical picture offers little comfort: the 14-day RSI sits at 31, flirting with oversold territory without any sign of stabilization, while the price remains 37 percent below its 200-day moving average.

A Partnership Announcement Offers a Glimmer — But Not Much Else

Against this bleak backdrop, Evotec moved early this week to signal that its pipeline still carries weight. The company announced the launch of an AI-driven research collaboration with NASDAQ-listed Odyssey Therapeutics, focused on autoimmune and inflammatory disease research. Evotec will contribute its data-driven discovery platform and AI screening capabilities, with milestone payments tied to the validation of drug candidate series.

It's the kind of deal that demonstrates operational capacity in a period when the core business is contracting. But the financial terms were not disclosed, leaving investors to wonder how much of this partnership will translate into tangible revenue — a question that has become increasingly urgent given the company's recent track record with exactly this type of arrangement.

The Half-Year Picture: Shrinking Revenue, Deepening Losses

The interim figures confirmed what management had already signaled with its drastic guidance cut in mid-July. Revenue fell 19.2 percent to €300.1 million in the first half, while adjusted EBITDA came in at minus €42.7 million — a sharp deterioration from the minus €1.9 million recorded in the same period last year. Since the confirmation of those numbers, the shares have lost another 6.1 percent.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evotec?

For the full year, management now guides for revenue between €570 million and €610 million, with adjusted EBITDA ranging from minus €70 million to minus €105 million. That represents a fundamental reversal from the original forecast, which had anticipated a positive operating result.

The root cause traces back to the profit warning of July 14, when Evotec revealed that roughly 40 percent of its revenue reduction had been pushed into 2027 due to delayed milestone payments and postponed contract signings. That dependency on large, not-yet-finalized agreements is precisely what prompted Berenberg analyst Christian Ehmann to downgrade the stock from "Buy" to "Hold" in mid-July, slashing his price target by 62 percent from €9.40 to €3.60.

Bright Spots Within the Portfolio

Not everything is moving in the wrong direction. The Discovery & Preclinical Development (D&PD) segment posted net revenue growth of 28 percent year-over-year in the first half, and Just–Evotec Biologics reports high capacity utilization. If management can convert partnerships like the one with Odyssey Therapeutics into additional contracts — this time closed on schedule — the company could gradually reduce its criticized reliance on uncertain large-scale deals.

There's also a buffer to work with. Evotec ended the second quarter with a net cash position of €465.6 million, providing the financial runway to implement the Horizon program while waiting for milestone payments to resume.

Governance Questions Add to the Strain

The operational challenges are compounded by personnel turbulence in the supervisory body. Camilla Macapili Languille stepped down from the Supervisory Board effective August 7, removing a long-serving independent member of the audit committee. The departure adds to a series of governance changes that have occupied the company in recent months — an unwelcome distraction during a period when investor confidence is already fragile.

What Comes Next

The near-term trajectory hinges on two variables: whether the promised Horizon savings materialize visibly over the coming quarters, and whether D&PD can sustain its growth momentum. If both hold, a stabilization scenario remains realistic, even if the stock's technical position argues against reading too much into oversold conditions.

If cost discipline falters — say, because further milestone payments fail to arrive — the guidance could come under renewed pressure. The next concrete test arrives with the upcoming quarterly figures, which will show whether the Horizon transformation is actually gaining speed or whether Evotec continues to fall short of its own, already significantly reduced targets.
