Evotec's Short Sellers Got Squeezed by a Single Sentence

Evotec stock rose as much as 8.5% after its CFO said indicators were moving the right direction, squeezing short sellers who hold 21.9% of shares.

A vague soundbite from a conference stage did what months of pipeline updates could not: it sent Evotec shares sharply higher. CFO Claire Hinshelwood told an investor gathering on Friday that business indicators were "moving in the right direction" — no guidance, no hard figures, no timeline. That was enough to lift the stock as much as 8.5% intraday, its biggest single-day advance since April.

The real story behind the jump has less to do with Evotec's operations than with who was positioned against it. Roughly 21.9% of the company's shares are out on loan to short sellers. When that much of the free float is betting on declines, a few encouraging words can force a scramble to cover — and that appears to be precisely what unfolded. The stock climbed to EUR 3.098 at its session peak, a one-week high, and led the SDax.

By the time trading settled, the move had cooled. At EUR 2.94, the shares remain about 13% below their 50-day moving average of EUR 3.38, underscoring how fragile the bounce looks.

Concrete Anchors Beneath the Rhetoric

Hinshelwood did offer two firmer footholds alongside the loose talk of early indicators. The "Horizon" cost-reduction program, targeting EUR 75 million in savings, is running on schedule, she said. And the drug developer's deal pipeline remains solid. Both are welcome notes for a company that has spent months losing the market's confidence — a savings plan that delivers would be a tangible signal.

Still, none of this amounts to proof of an operational turnaround. The gap between "indicators are pointing the right way" and confirmation in the numbers is wide, and on Friday the market papered over it without hesitation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evotec?

The broader picture explains the sensitivity. Evotec has shed roughly 46% since the start of the year and about 53% over twelve months. Its 52-week high of EUR 7.75, touched in early November last year, now looks like it belongs to a different company. Investors in the contract research and development space have learned that recoveries tend to fizzle faster than they form, and they increasingly insist on seeing results before extending trust.

A Pipeline Milestone Worth More Than a Soundbite

Quieter but more substantive news has been building on the science side. Subsidiary Just – Evotec Biologics has moved its antibody cocktail JST-018 against orthopoxviruses into a Phase 1 clinical trial. The candidate was developed under the U.S. Department of Defense's Accelerated Antibodies Program — a first sign that the platform appeals to government-backed efforts, not just commercial partners.

Shares changed hands at EUR 3.02 on Friday, up 3.9% from the previous close of EUR 2.90. Even so, the stock sits more than 61% below that November peak, and with a relative strength index of 38.8, the pop reads more like a technical rebound from oversold territory than a change in fundamental mood.

Whether the Biologics unit can turn research collaborations into valuable clinical programs is now the pivotal question. If JST-018 advances and generates solid data, it could offset the margin-thin contract research business that forced the company to cut its annual targets. A U.S. government engagement also carries a degree of funding certainty that is precious when sector demand is weak. Combined with the recently announced capital increase, that would give Evotec both fresh money and a second leg to stand on while the core business endures its dry spell. In that scenario, the shares could work their way back toward the 50-day line at EUR 3.38.

The Other Side of the Ledger

Dilution is the price of that capital raise — a cost the 45% year-to-date decline already hints at. Should JST-018 stumble in early testing, or the Pentagon tie-up prove a one-off without follow-on work, little would remain of the current advance. Adding to the uncertainty is an unconfirmed report that Triton Partners may be interested in acquiring the company. No timing or offer price has surfaced, and speculation of that kind can support a stock briefly before evaporating just as fast. A 30-day volatility reading of 38% shows how jittery the market has become.

Two paths now diverge. As long as the Biologics pipeline keeps delivering and no disappointing JST-018 data leaks out, the recovery can hold and the stock can gravitate toward its short-term averages. If that narrative cracks — through weak interim results or the quiet death of takeover chatter — a retest of the recent low becomes likely. The next real checkpoint for investors will be further JST-018 disclosures and any new detail from the capital increase.

Until then, Evotec remains a play for those with a high tolerance for risk, and their decision hinges on whether they weight the diversification strategy through Just – Evotec Biologics more heavily than the wounded core. For the 21.9% who bet on declines, Friday was an uncomfortable session. For everyone else, it was a reminder that in a heavily shorted name, one conference appearance can move more than a quarterly report — a mechanism with little to do with the business itself.
