Evotec's Partner Announcements Ring Hollow as Investors Fixate on the Slashed 2026 Targets

Evotec's stock hovers near €3.21 despite new partnerships, as guidance cut and weak Q2 weigh on sentiment.

The disconnect at Evotec has become hard to ignore: the Hamburg-based drug discovery group keeps signing new research alliances, yet its share price keeps drifting closer to the floor. At last check, the stock was changing hands at around €3.21, barely 2 percent above the €3.14 low it touched on September 2 — a level that now marks the company's 52-week trough.

The pattern is consistent. On September 2, Evotec unveiled a research collaboration with Plectonic Biotech focused on T-cell-activating approaches for solid tumors, pairing its BiTco platform with Plectonic's LOGIBODY technology. Since that announcement, the shares have slipped another 2.6 percent. A month earlier, the company had struck a similar AI-driven discovery deal with Odyssey Therapeutics in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases — that one has been followed by a decline of 7.1 percent.

What makes these muted reactions telling is that they are not isolated. The market's indifference to scientific progress has a clear root cause, and it dates back to mid-July, when Evotec delivered what amounted to a shock to its 2026 guidance. The company now expects revenue of just €570 million to €610 million, a dramatic step down from the €700 million to €780 million it had previously projected. Even more jarring was the swing in adjusted EBITDA guidance, which went from a range of zero to plus €40 million to a loss of €70 million to €105 million. Management attributed the shortfall to milestone payments and partnership revenues being pushed into 2027.

The sell-side response was swift. Berenberg analyst Christian Ehmann cut his rating from "Buy" to "Hold" in mid-July and slashed his price target from €9.40 to €3.60, citing the company's heavy reliance on large contracts that have yet to be finalized. Deutsche Bank Research followed with a more modest reduction, trimming its target from €4.50 to €3.50 while keeping a "Hold" stance. RBC Capital Markets, however, has held firm with an "Outperform" rating and a €10.00 target — a figure that looks increasingly aspirational given the current price action.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evotec?

When Evotec confirmed the reduced outlook alongside its first-half results on August 13, the numbers did little to soften the blow. Second-quarter revenue fell 16.2 percent year-on-year to €143.5 million, with adjusted EBITDA landing at minus €20.8 million. For the full first half, revenue was down 19.2 percent at €300.1 million. One bright spot did emerge: the Discovery & Preclinical Development segment posted net revenue growth of 28 percent in the first six months, offering at least some evidence that the company's core service business retains momentum.

The stock has shed 4.6 percent since the August 13 results were published. Adding to the pressure, Camilla Macapili Languille stepped down from the supervisory board in early August — a departure that has coincided with a 7.8 percent decline in the share price and does little to bolster confidence among institutional investors during a period when credibility is already stretched.

Technically, the chart offers no comfort either. The shares trade well below both their 50-day moving average of €3.71 and their 200-day average of €4.92. Year-to-date, Evotec is down 41 percent, and over the past twelve months the decline has stretched to 45 percent.

The next catalyst on the calendar is the third-quarter report, typically published in November, though no exact date has been confirmed. For now, the market's message seems clear: until Evotec can point to binding contract wins that substantiate its revised targets, fresh research partnerships — however scientifically compelling — are unlikely to shift the narrative.
