Evotec Bets on Pipeline Momentum While the Market Demands Proof on Costs

Evotec SE is pressing ahead with its scientific partnerships even as its share price tells a far less encouraging story. The Hamburg-based biotech's stock has shed 15.2% since it confirmed a downgraded full-year outlook roughly three weeks ago, changing hands at EUR 2.85. Since the start of the year, the decline has reached 48%, leaving a market capitalization of EUR 517.80 million.
That gap between laboratory ambition and capital-market reality frames the central question facing the company: can a steady stream of research collaborations outweigh the drag from a restructuring that has yet to show up in the numbers?
A Fresh Oncology Alliance
On September 2, Evotec struck a research partnership with Plectonic Biotech. The two companies plan to combine Plectonic's Logibody technology with Evotec's BiTco platform to develop novel T-cell engagers aimed at solid tumors. The arrangement extends Evotec's technological reach in next-generation cancer therapies, an area where the company has staked much of its long-term identity.
The oncology tie-up is not the only pipeline development drawing attention. Subsidiary Just – Evotec Biologics has advanced its monoclonal antibody cocktail JST-018 against orthopoxviruses into a Phase I clinical trial. That program is being pursued jointly with the United States Department of Defense, and its progression underscores the technical capabilities of the biologics unit.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evotec?
Horizon Savings Become the Yardstick
For all the scientific activity, the metric that market participants are watching most closely sits on the cost side. Chief Financial Officer Claire Hinshelwood, speaking at an investor conference, outlined that Evotec is targeting total savings of EUR 75 million through its transformation program, known as Horizon. Between 20% and 30% of that sum is expected to be realized in 2026.
Hinshelwood has said the company's business indicators are moving in the right direction and expects them to translate into future revenue. Whether that optimism holds depends heavily on execution. Should the cost reductions fall short of the stated target, profitability would remain under pressure, and the service-driven drug discovery sector offers no shortage of competition.
A Mixed Operating Picture
Evotec's guidance for 2026 points to group revenue of between EUR 570 million and EUR 610 million, with adjusted group EBITDA anticipated to remain deeply negative. Even so, there are pockets of improvement. In the Drug Discovery & Preclinical Development segment, sales picked up noticeably year over year, a trend management attributes to stronger customer activity and more disciplined commercial execution. A sustained recovery in that research business is widely viewed as a prerequisite for winning future development contracts.
Dilution and Boardroom Changes
The company's capital structure has also shifted. Following the issuance of new subscription shares, which took effect on September 9, the total number of voting rights stands at 177,909,968. According to the company, no multiple voting rights exist. The move has diluted existing holdings, adding another layer of caution for investors already contending with the share price decline.
Evotec at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
There has been movement in the supervisory board as well. Camilla Macapili Languille resigned her seat on August 7. She had served as an independent member since June 2022 and was also active on the Audit & Compliance Committee.
What Has to Happen Next
The path forward hinges on whether Evotec can demonstrate that Horizon delivers the savings it promises. Evidence of measurable cost reductions, combined with interim operational progress on programs such as JST-018, would go some way toward validating the strategic reset. As long as the current share price level holds, the prospect of a bottoming-out remains alive. Should confidence erode further, however, the downward trend could resume. Investors will be watching the upcoming reports on cost development closely for signs that the turnaround is more than a promise.
