Evotec Appoints New Science Chief as Investors Weigh a Beat Against an Unchanged Outlook
Published on 10/16/2026 at 14:42 | Editorial boerse-global.deEvotec has named Dr. Joanna Holbrook as Chief Scientific Officer and a member of the management board, effective November 1, 2026. The appointment lands in the narrow window between the company's preliminary nine-month figures and the release of its full third-quarter report — a stretch in which shareholders are juggling two separate questions: who will steer Evotec's science, and how much weight the recent earnings surprise actually deserves.
The stock slipped 2.5% on the day the news broke. Nothing in the company's disclosures ties that decline to the Holbrook hire, and the personnel announcement on its own does not account for the move.
A consensus beat with a built-in caveat
Evotec reported preliminary group revenue of roughly EUR 465.0 million for the first nine months of 2026, alongside an adjusted group EBITDA of about minus EUR 42.8 million. Management said both figures came in ahead of market expectations — but attached a significant qualifier, noting the outperformance stemmed largely from the timing of consensus estimates. Beating the consensus, in other words, is not the same as raising the bar for the full year.
That distinction matters because the annual guidance stayed exactly where it was. Revenue for 2026 is still projected at around EUR 570 million to EUR 610 million, or roughly EUR 595 million to EUR 635 million at constant exchange rates. The preliminary numbers did not push the top-line range any higher.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evotec?
The same restraint applies to profitability. Evotec continues to expect adjusted group EBITDA of about minus EUR 70 million to minus EUR 105 million for the year. On a constant-currency basis, that figure sits at roughly minus EUR 60 million to minus EUR 90 million. Either way, the currency treatment does nothing to change the underlying loss picture — and the confirmed guidance implies a steeper adjusted loss for the full year than the nine-month tally reported so far.
Two analysts, two very different readings
The preliminary release drew praise from RBC Capital Markets. Analyst Charles Weston kept Evotec at "Outperform" with a EUR 10 price target on Wednesday, pointing to revenue and operating profit that topped market forecasts. His assessment shows how the same set of numbers can support a markedly more confident view.
Deutsche Bank Research took the opposite tack. The firm maintained its "Hold" rating and a EUR 3.50 price target, citing unexpectedly cloudy market prospects for the fourth quarter, according to dpa-AFX. That concern lands squarely on the period investors are watching most closely. Should those weak conditions shape the coming months, a stronger interim showing may not be enough to justify a lasting revaluation. There is no contradiction here: a positive surprise in the year to date and a difficult finish can coexist.
The bridge Evotec still has to build
For the bullish case to hold, Evotec does not need to raise guidance outright. It would be enough for the full figures to confirm the preliminary numbers and for management to lay out a credible path for the rest of the year. The better-than-expected performance would then serve as a solid starting point — without implying an operational turnaround has already arrived.
What investors should really watch is how convincingly Evotec connects its nine-month results to a full-year forecast that has not budged. A better interim position does not automatically translate into improved earnings at year-end, and the confirmed annual range keeps a higher adjusted loss in play than what has been booked so far.
The next hard checkpoint is November 5, 2026, when Evotec is scheduled to publish complete results for the third quarter and the first nine months. Confirmation of the preliminary figures alone will not settle the matter. The decisive test is whether the company can explain, coherently, how it moves from its current earnings position to an unchanged annual target — and whether the gloomy fourth-quarter outlook leaves that explanation standing.
