Evonik's Product Pipeline and BASF's Conditional Interest Are Two Separate Bets

Evonik has spent October rolling out new products and launching a Japanese recycling venture, while the question of whether BASF will raise its takeover offer remains unresolved. For investors, the two threads answer entirely different questions — and conflating them is the easy mistake to make.

The next hard date on the calendar is November 3, when Evonik reports third-quarter 2026 results. That filing will put the actual business performance under the spotlight, independent of whether BASF eventually returns with a richer bid. New product launches, by contrast, say nothing on their own about the earnings they will eventually contribute.

Recycling, Research and a Fresh Set of Materials

On October 13, Evonik kicked off an initiative with Toyotsu Chemiplas and Sanyo Chemical Industries to chemically recycle polyurethane foam in Japan. The waste is to be converted into recycled polyols and amines for new polyurethane products — a genuine circular-economy play, though the start of a project is not the same as a realized contribution to the bottom line.

The research side brought its own headline. Evonik's "Self Driving Labs" won the CPHI Pharma Award 2026 in the "Digital Transformation" category, with the ceremony held on October 6 at the CPHI trade fair in Milan.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evonik?

On the product front, Evonik unveiled two stiffer VESTAKEEP PEEK grades for long-term dental prostheses. The biocompatible materials are designed for both fixed and removable restorations and are compatible with standard CAD/CAM workflows, pairing greater rigidity with improved polishability. They arrived a day after Monday's launch of Lypron, a rumen-stable lysine solution for ruminants that slots into Evonik's amino-acid balancing concept. French coatings specialist Sipena will manufacture Lypron exclusively for Evonik.

Each announcement covers a distinct application, and their immediate value lies in the products introduced and the manufacturing arrangements agreed. A launch is not a proven revenue or profit increase — a distinction that matters when weighing operational progress against financial acceleration.

BASF Keeps Its Options Open — With Strings

On the takeover front, dpa-AFX reported last week, citing people familiar with the matter, that BASF is prepared to discuss a higher offer — but only after gaining access to Evonik's books. Evonik had rejected the initial bid of EUR 22.15 per share as too low.

That makes a sweetened offer a possibility rather than a confirmed new proposal, let alone a completed transaction. Any bid remains tied to the conditions of the specific plan, and the prospect of a follow-up offer does not substitute for an agreement between the two companies.

Evonik at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The sensible approach is to keep the two strands apart. The product and recycling announcements document new offerings, not their commercial success. Likewise, the chance of a higher bid does not settle the question of whether the two sides can reach terms.

November 3 is therefore the next concrete checkpoint for fundamental valuation. The takeover question runs on its own track — and anyone assessing Evonik should not mistake a possible transaction price for the value the operating business itself has to justify.
