Evonik's October: Three Product Launches, a Japanese Recycling Pilot and a Suitor Still Reading the Fine Print
Published on 10/21/2026 at 16:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deEvonik has spent October building a case on the shop floor rather than in the deal room. Over roughly a week the specialty chemicals group confirmed a trade fair appearance, rolled out two new product lines, picked up a pharma award and launched a chemical recycling initiative in Japan — a burst of operational news that sits alongside, but does not settle, the question of whether BASF will come back with a richer takeover offer.
The two threads carry very different weight for investors. Product launches and pilot projects are confirmed events whose revenue contribution is not. A higher bid from BASF is neither confirmed nor concluded.
A recycling pilot, not yet a business
The most substantive of the operational announcements came on 13 October, when Evonik kicked off a chemical recycling initiative for polyurethane foam in Japan alongside Toyotsu Chemiplas and Sanyo Chemical. Evonik supplies its hydrolysis process, Toyotsu Chemiplas handles collection and logistics, and Sanyo Chemical contributes its polyol and process expertise. The goal is to recover recycled polyols and amines from post-consumer foam for use in new polyurethane products.
The partners intend to evaluate the model jointly first. That places the project firmly in development territory — a starting point rather than an operating recycling business with a track record behind it.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evonik?
Dental plastics, ruminant nutrition and a Milan prize
Product news has come thick and fast. On Monday Evonik introduced Lypron, a rumen-protected lysine solution for ruminants that extends its amino acid balancing concept in ruminant feed; French coating specialist Sipena manufactures the product exclusively for Evonik. A day later the group presented two stiffer VESTAKEEP PEEK grades aimed at long-term dental prostheses, designed for both fixed and removable restorations and built to slot into standard CAD/CAM workflows.
Research recognition arrived in between: Evonik collected the CPHI Pharma Award 2026 in the "Digital Transformation" category for its "Self Driving Labs" at a ceremony held on 6 October at the CPHI trade fair in Milan. The company has also confirmed it will attend Cosmetorium 2026 in Barcelona, which runs from 21 to 22 October.
Each of these touches a different end market. What they demonstrate is the products themselves and, in Lypron's case, the manufacturing arrangement behind them. None of them amounts to a proven increase in sales or profit, and investors would be wrong to read a launch as an immediate financial acceleration.
BASF keeps its options open — at arm's length
The takeover story remains the other half of the valuation equation. dpa-AFX reported on 14 October, citing people familiar with the transaction, that BASF was keeping the door open to a higher offer, contingent on first gaining access to Evonik's books. Evonik had already rejected BASF's initial bid of EUR 22.15 per share as too low.
No revised offer has been confirmed, and no transaction is assured. That makes the suitor question a separate valuation driver from the projects Evonik has actually set in motion.
Evonik at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
How much the takeover theme can move the stock was on display on 5 October, when Berenberg lifted its rating from "Sell" to "Hold" and raised its price target from EUR 15.50 to EUR 20. Analyst Sebastian Bray pointed to BASF's interest, noting that talks could support the share price even with methionine prices falling.
3 November is the date that matters
The next scheduled checkpoint for judging the business on its own merits is the third-quarter 2026 report, due on 3 November. That release will put revenue and earnings under the microscope — a test entirely separate from whether BASF chooses to put a firmer number on the table.
