Evonik's Dual Track: Pharma Lab Wins and a Political Shield Against BASF

Evonik's pharmaceutical division has quietly notched two technological wins this week, even as the Essen-based specialty chemicals group finds itself at the center of a widening ownership debate that has now reached the floor of North Rhine-Westphalia's state parliament.
On Wednesday, the company collected the CPHI Pharma Award 2026 in the "Digital Transformation" category for its deployment of so-called self-driving laboratories. Two days earlier, it had unveiled a newly developed biodegradable polymer platform intended as the foundation for future EUDRAGIT excipients used in oral drug delivery. Evonik made laboratory quantities of the platform available to selected partners on Monday.
Those advances sharpen the group's technological profile, but they are not what is moving the stock. Consolidation speculation remains the dominant force in the share price. Since BASF signaled roughly a week ago that it might sweeten its offer, the stock has added 4.0 percent. Friday's session closed at EUR 21.42, leaving the shares just 0.9 percent below their 52-week high of EUR 21.62. Year-to-date, the gain stands at 60 percent—a rally that already bakes in a substantial portion of any prospective takeover premium.
Düsseldorf Enters the Fray
The political dimension came into focus Wednesday when the SPD parliamentary group in the Düsseldorf state legislature proposed examining a state stake in the specialty chemicals company. The motion is headed for parliamentary debate in the plenary. Its aim: for the state and the RAG Foundation to jointly hold more than 50 percent plus X of the shares, creating a bulwark against a hostile takeover.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evonik?
The initiative responds directly to BASF's courtship. Evonik has rejected earlier approaches; according to Reuters, a prior offer stood at around EUR 22.15 per share and was deemed insufficient. The RAG Foundation's board of trustees has so far left negotiations to the managements of both companies.
Analysts Lift Their Marks
Market observers have adjusted their views accordingly. Berenberg upgraded the stock from "Sell" to "Hold" on October 5, lifting its price target from EUR 15.50 to EUR 20.00. Analyst Sebastian Bray cited BASF's takeover interest as giving the shares a valuation floor. A day later, Parmantier & Cie. weighed in with a sector study, assigning a "Hold" rating and a six-month price target of EUR 20.50.
Both targets sit below the valuation the market currently assigns the group, whose market capitalization stands at EUR 9.79 billion.
Earnings Report on the Horizon
Attention is now shifting toward operating performance. Evonik will publish detailed third-quarter 2026 figures on November 3, 2026. That interim report should offer concrete insight into how demand has actually developed in the core businesses and the extent to which operational milestones—such as the new platforms—can support margin development. Until then, the valuation of the Essen-based company remains tethered to the next move in the takeover standoff, with political signals from North Rhine-Westphalia and the maneuvering of major shareholders likely to set the tempo on the exchange.
