Evonik's 40% Earnings Jump Still Falls Short of Consensus as Analysts Split on the Stock

Evonik's third-quarter figures landed almost exactly where the market had pitched them — just barely on the wrong side. Adjusted EBITDA came in at €629 million for the quarter, a 40% leap from the same period a year earlier, yet the consensus estimate stood at €633.2 million. Growth and a positive surprise, it turns out, are two different things.

Revenue climbed 13% to €3.83 billion, with management pointing to both higher selling prices and larger volumes as the drivers. That mix matters: the improvement does not rest on pricing alone.

Two Houses, Two Verdicts

JPMorgan reaffirmed its "Underweight" rating and €14 price target, arguing that the company's full-year guidance implies a weaker fourth quarter than the bank had previously modeled. Organic growth and adjusted EBITDA, by the bank's reckoning, came in in line with expectations — so the caution hinges on how the year will close, not on what has already been reported.

Jefferies, by contrast, stuck with its buy recommendation and €20 target, while acknowledging that adjusted EBITDA fell just shy of consensus. Neither house pretends the quarter beat the mark; they simply draw opposite conclusions from the same numbers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evonik?

The apparent contradiction between Evonik's own outlook and JPMorgan's read is not a real one. Evonik expects fourth-quarter earnings above the prior-year level. A result that improves year on year can still undershoot what an analyst had penciled in. Which yardstick you pick decides the verdict.

Red Ink Below the Line

Adjusted EBITDA tells only half the story. The group's net result remained negative at minus €53 million, an improvement on minus €106 million a year earlier but a loss nonetheless. Evonik also booked €313 million in provisions for additional efficiency measures, including severance payments.

That gap between the operating line and the bottom line is the crux for anyone assessing the recovery. A smaller loss is not a return to profit, and the adjusted figure should not be conflated with earnings after every charge.

Tailwind From Asia — and a Question Mark

Part of the operational lift comes from outside the company. Reuters reported supply disruptions among Asian competitors tied to the Middle East crisis, and Evonik shares gained 2.0% on the day. A softer competitive field, however, is not the same as sustainably stronger demand, leaving open how long that support lasts.

Management is not standing still on the industrial side. Evonik disclosed €52 million for a new production facility for organomodified silicones and a tank farm at its Essen Goldschmidtstraße site. In parallel, the "Evonik Tailor Made" efficiency program has been extended through 2029, with the bulk of the new provisions earmarked for it.

Evonik at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Capital spending on production capacity and charges from restructuring therefore sit side by side — one shapes the manufacturing base, the other weighs on group earnings.

CFO Michael Rauch reiterated that Evonik intends to shape its future "under its own steam." For the full year 2026, the company expects adjusted EBITDA in the upper half of its €2.0 billion to €2.2 billion range, tightening rather than widening the existing guidance.

Whether that counts as reassurance depends on the lens. The operating business is visibly gaining strength; the net result has yet to confirm a return to profitability. Until operational progress also clears consensus expectations, the gap between JPMorgan's €14 and Jefferies' €20 will keep the debate alive.
