Evonik's 22.15-Euro Question: Pharma Wins, Political Shields, and a Bid Still Waiting for a Handshake

Evonik's share price is doing something unusual for a specialty chemicals maker these days: hovering just shy of a 52-week peak, propped up less by earnings momentum than by the possibility that BASF might come back to the table with a sweeter offer. The stock was quoted at 21.36 euros in pre-market trading, a mere 1.2% below its recent high of 21.62 euros, while a later reading put it at 21.06 euros, down 1.7% on the day after a strong multi-week rally.
That rally has a clear catalyst. BASF's rejected takeover approach, reportedly pitched at 22.15 euros per share for a total volume exceeding 10.3 billion euros, has kept a floor under the stock even as methionine prices soften. The RAG-Stiftung turned the offer down, and Evonik has since made clear that no talks are underway and that no revised bid has been confirmed. Reuters has reported that BASF could adjust its offer in further discussions, though nothing official has emerged.
A Pharma Pipeline That Keeps Delivering
While the market fixates on the bid, Evonik's operating side has been quietly stacking up wins. On October 6, at the CPHI industry fair in Milan, the Essen-based group picked up the CPHI Pharma Award in the "Digital Transformation" category for its work on so-called Self Driving Labs. The company also unveiled a newly developed biodegradable polymer platform designed to serve as the technical backbone for future generations of EUDRAGIT-branded functional excipients used in oral drug delivery.
The calendar ahead is crowded with industry engagements. Evonik is attending the Festival of Biologics in Switzerland from Tuesday through October 15, and the SEPAWA Congress in Germany runs from October 14 to 16.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evonik?
Analysts Split the Difference
Two analyst actions on October 6 captured the tension between valuation discipline and takeover optionality. Berenberg's Sebastian Bray lifted his rating from "Sell" to "Hold" and raised the price target from 15.50 to 20.00 euros, reasoning that BASF's interest could support the share price even if methionine prices decline. On the same day, Parmantier & Cie issued a "Hold" rating with a 20.50-euro target as part of a sector study.
Düsseldorf Draws a Line
The political dimension has grown harder to ignore. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the state government has made clear that Evonik's jobs and its independent development must not be jeopardized by any takeover. The SPD parliamentary group in the Düsseldorf state legislature went further, filing a motion calling for a state stake in Evonik to permanently secure its corporate independence. The proposal envisions the state joining forces with the RAG-Stiftung to lock down a controlling majority. The economics ministry and the state chancellery responded cautiously, and the FDP rejected the idea outright.
Labor representatives have added their voice to the pushback, broadening a front that now spans politics, unions, and the company's own foundation shareholder.
November 3 Is the Real Test
For all the takeover noise, the next hard data point comes on November 3, 2026, when Evonik publishes its official third-quarter 2026 results. Until then, the share will likely trade on headlines from Ludwigshafen and Düsseldorf rather than from its own labs — a dynamic that leaves the stock within 2.6% of its 52-week high and vulnerable to any shift in the bid narrative.
