For a few heady sessions, Eutelsat looked like the accidental beneficiary of a geopolitical rift. That trade unwound with brutal speed on Thursday, when the French satellite operator's shares tumbled 10% to EUR 1.53, erasing the gains that had lifted the stock to a EUR 1.70 close just a day earlier.

The trigger came straight from Kyiv. Ukraine's defence ministry told the Kyiv Independent that Starlink connectivity for its armed forces has been fully restored, pulling the rug from under the central premise of the rally. Reports of restrictions on military Starlink access had sent investors scrambling toward European alternatives, on the theory that the continent's satellite champions could step in at a moment's notice. Thursday's session offered a blunt rebuttal to that assumption.

The retreat was not uniform across timeframes. Measured over seven days, Eutelsat shares still hold a gain of roughly 18%, a reminder of how violently the stock has swung on headlines alone. One day's reckoning, it turns out, does not undo a week of speculation.

A Strategic Wish Versus Battlefield Reality

The gap between political aspiration and operational capability has been hiding in plain sight. Reuters reported that Eutelsat's OneWeb network was never a ready substitute for the demanding conditions of front-line combat — a detail that cuts to the heart of why the rally was always on borrowed time. Regulatory approvals and the physical build-out of a constellation move to their own slow rhythm, indifferent to the tempo of news wires.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?

That build-out is nonetheless advancing. Roughly two weeks ago, Airbus Defence and Space completed the first 32 new OneWeb satellites, part of a broader programme to refresh a fleet of 669 units. In a twist that borders on irony, the rival most responsible for Eutelsat's competitive headaches — SpaceX — is slated to carry those satellites into orbit.

Attention is also drifting toward Asia. Sunil Bharti Mittal of Bharti Enterprises has argued that Eutelsat OneWeb deserves priority over Starlink in India's satellite communications licensing queue, given that its application was filed five years ago. Final sign-off from regulators, however, has yet to materialise.

Broadcasting Deals Keep the Core Turning

Away from the geopolitical noise, Eutelsat quietly logged progress in its traditional broadcast business on Wednesday. The company renewed a multi-year partnership with Antik Sat and telecom operator A1, covering satellite capacity at the 16° East orbital slot. Those frequencies carry direct-to-home television services for viewers in Slovakia.

The arrangement locks in recurring revenue from a stable corner of the portfolio at a time when management is simultaneously pouring resources into low-earth-orbit expansion — a dual-track strategy that demands patience as much as capital.

All Eyes on the October Print

With the speculative froth blown off, the market's focus is shifting back to fundamentals. Eutelsat is due to publish its next set of business figures on 29 October 2026, a release expected to shed light on how the OneWeb integration and demand for secure data links are actually translating into the accounts.

Until then, European space stocks are likely to stay acutely sensitive to every move their US rivals make. Price swings built on a competitor's disruptions rarely form a durable foundation; more often they obscure the genuine obstacles the sector faces — steep investment costs, sluggish licensing processes and relentless pressure from American heavyweights. The October report will be the first real test of whether Eutelsat's strategic repositioning shows up where it counts: in revenue.
