Reflecting on Women's Month: Celebrating Women's Empowerment in Epworth

BRUSSELS, 02 April 2024 / PRN Africa / -- As March draws to a close, we reflect on a momentous occasion in Epworth, where Team Europe and Switzerland joined forces to celebrate International Women's Day in style.

Honorable Monica Mutsvangwa, Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, graced the occasion as the guest of honor, alongside EU Ambassadors and distinguished representatives from various ministries, local authorities, the UN, NMB, and the development community. Together, they highlighted the achievements of women in Epworth, reaffirming their commitment to supporting communities across Zimbabwe in their pursuit of empowerment.

The event showcased the impact of Team Europe's support, particularly through initiatives like the first-ever 'Safe Market,' which provides violence-free public spaces for women to conduct economic activities. Ambassador Jobst von Kirchmann, representing Team Europe, emphasized the collective efforts towards advancing Women’s Economic Empowerment under the Team Europe Initiative on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (TEI – GEWE). The financial support for TEI totals more than EUR 270 million, reflecting the commitment of EU and its member states in driving tangible change in communities like Epworth.

Highlighting the significance of partnerships, Ambassador von Kirchmann acknowledged the remarkable results achieved by the Spotlight Initiative in the course of the four years it had been supported by the EU (2019-2023) in combating gender-based violence and promoting women’s economic independence. The Epworth Safe Market, praised for providing a safe space conducive to women's progress, exemplifies the potential outcomes when safety and equality are prioritized.

But it wasn't just about speeches and pledges; the event was a lively affair, with women stallholders sharing their empowerment stories and showcasing their products. From discussions on accessing finance for business growth to the importance of venturing into diverse markets, the event sparked meaningful conversations and fostered connections.
