Europe's Most-Bought Global Equity ETF Is Getting Cheaper — and More Crowded

Vanguard's flagship ETF pulls in $18.2B in H1, cuts fees to 0.14%, and adds Vietnam stocks as rivals launch cheaper trackers.

The Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF has become the undisputed heavyweight of Europe's exchange-traded fund arena, pulling in capital at a pace that has left the rest of the industry scrambling to keep up. Data from TrackInsight shows the fund absorbed $18.2 billion in net new money through July, while LSEG Lipper tallied €3.3 billion of inflows for that single month alone — the highest figure recorded across the entire European ETF market.

The money trail extends well into August. The accumulating share class drew €863.3 million in the week to August 21, the strongest weekly intake among all European-listed exchange-traded products, according to ETF Express. Vanguard itself ranked third among European ETF issuers in the week to August 14 with €1.52 billion of inflows, trailing only iShares and Xtrackers.

A fee war at the top of the table

That gravitational pull is now being tested from two directions. BlackRock and DWS have both launched competing FTSE All-World trackers in recent months, priced at 0.12 percent — undercutting the Vanguard product's original fee. Vanguard responded in July by slashing its own charges from 0.22 percent to 0.14 percent, following an earlier reduction in October 2025. The cumulative effect: fees have dropped by more than a third in roughly a year.

The parent company has not stopped there. Vanguard recently listed three new global equity UCITS ETFs on the London Stock Exchange and other European venues: the FTSE Global All-Cap UCITS ETF at 0.07 percent, the FTSE Global Small-Cap UCITS ETF at 0.22 percent, and the FTSE All-World ex-U.S. UCITS ETF at 0.12 percent. The last of these, carrying ISIN IE0009A5ADV9, went live on August 18 with both accumulating and distributing share classes, aimed at investors who want to manage their U.S. exposure separately.

Across Vanguard's entire European equity and bond ETF lineup, the asset-weighted average fee now stands at 0.11 percent. The pricing pressure is unmistakable — yet the flagship fund's inflows show no sign of abating, suggesting brand recognition and liquidity still outweigh marginal cost differences in investor decision-making.

Momentum in the price chart

The capital surge coincides with a strong run in the underlying shares. The fund closed Friday at €167.80, roughly 1.4 percent below its 52-week high of €170.24 reached on August 13. Year-to-date gains stand at 15 percent, extending to 23 percent over twelve months. On a monthly basis, the fund is up 4.3 percent.

Morningstar analysts reaffirmed their "Gold" rating for the fund in late August, placing it among the four best global large-cap blend ETFs for 2026, citing above-average risk-adjusted net returns after costs. The fund has also been nominated as a finalist in the "global accumulating ETF" category at the Best ETFs Switzerland 2026 awards, with a portfolio spanning 3,794 positions and assets of CHF 24,328 million.

Vietnam joins the index

A quieter but significant change is on the horizon. Six Vietnamese equities — including Vietcombank, Vingroup and Vinhomes — are set to join the underlying FTSE All-World Index during the semi-annual September review, taking effect after the close on September 18. The addition coincides with Vietnam's official reclassification from frontier market to secondary emerging market status, broadening the fund's geographic reach.

The fund's assets have swelled accordingly, reaching $79.55 billion at the end of July, with the specific share class accounting for $53.36 billion. That scale remains the fund's clearest competitive moat — even as the field of challengers grows more crowded by the month.
