Ether drops 2.6% after $109.66M liquidation, but ETF inflows hit $697M weekly, institutional staking grows, and SEC proposes crypto rules.

Ethereum's blistering August advance hit a familiar wall over the weekend, as $109.66 million in leveraged positions were forcibly unwound — with long traders absorbing 80.1 percent of the liquidations. The purge, described by market observers as a textbook "leverage reset," knocked the token down 2.6 percent on Sunday to $2,452.20.

The pullback, however, looks modest against the broader tape. Ether still trades roughly 30 percent higher over the trailing seven days and 31 percent on the month, even as the asset remains 17 percent in the red year-to-date and 49 percent below its level from a year ago. At $2,452.20, the cryptocurrency sits roughly half the distance from its 52-week high of $4,953.73, set last August.

A Demand Shock That Arrived Without Warning

Just days before the weekend shakeout, the narrative was one of relentless accumulation. US spot Ethereum ETFs pulled in $189.15 million in net inflows on August 19, followed by approximately $220.8 million the next day — a two-day surge that capped the strongest weekly showing since October 2025, with $697.2 million in net additions through August 21.

The reversal from outflows was abrupt. In the week of August 10-14, the same funds bled $2.26 million, with BlackRock's ETHA shrinking by $16.39 million and Fidelity's FETH by $5.60 million. Within days, the picture flipped entirely: combined US spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs absorbed $2.6 billion in fresh capital last week, the most since October 2025, according to media reports.

BlackRock has been the primary engine. ETHA contributed roughly $122 million to inflows on August 19, then added another $173.3 million the following day. Fidelity's FETH chipped in $36.54 million, while Grayscale's Mini Ether Trust added $16 million. BlackRock's staked product, ETHB, contributed an additional $35.94 million on August 20.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ethereum?

Institutional Appetite Broadens Beyond the Funds

The ETF wave is only part of the institutional story. Fidelity has petitioned the SEC to stake up to 100 percent of its spot Ether fund's holdings, with 85 percent of the yield flowing back to the fund. Morgan Stanley, meanwhile, launched MSSE, a trading product giving brokerage clients exposure to Ethereum with future access to staking rewards.

Corporate balance sheets are growing heavier with Ether as well. Nasdaq-listed SharpLink reported its institutional shareholder base had risen to 60 percent and announced plans to stake $200 million worth of Ether via the Lido protocol. Miner BitMine added 9,926 ETH — roughly $19 million — bringing its total holdings to 5.8 million ETH.

Washington Sends Mixed Signals

The regulatory backdrop is evolving, though not without friction. The SEC on August 18 proposed long-awaited crypto rules that would exempt certain crypto companies and offerings from US securities regulations — a move that could ease token issuance and capital raising for Ethereum-adjacent projects. The proposal, dubbed "Regulation Crypto Assets," includes registration exemptions for offerings under $75 million and a safe harbor for specific investment contracts.

The announcement came five days after the agency abruptly canceled a planned meeting on new crypto rules, suggesting the proposal was delayed but ultimately delivered. Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, characterized the framework as a clear compliance path for tokenized financing that would favor Ethereum.

Yet the legislative front remains stalled. The CLARITY Act is stuck in the US Senate, though a cloture vote has been scheduled for September 15. The bill would establish a federal framework for DeFi and stablecoin issuers, but its fate remains uncertain.

Network Development and Global Adoption Press On

On the technical side, Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade is advancing. Developers have proposed September 28 for activation on the Sepolia testnet, following processing issues encountered among Lighthouse, Prysm, and Teku clients during the eighth devnet run. EIP-7610, a protective rule against contract creation on non-empty storage, was removed from the upgrade to reduce the burden on client operators.

Ethereum at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The public testnet Platåberget launched in mid-August, while developers simultaneously work to define the scope of the Hegotá upgrade planned for 2027, with FOCIL as a central component of the consensus layer.

Ethereum's utility as a payments rail is also gaining international traction. South Korea's KB Kookmin Bank announced it would be the country's first financial institution to use the Kinexys platform for international payment settlements, built on the Ethereum network.

What Comes Next

At $2,461.11 — the level cited in earlier trading — Ether sits 28 percent above its 50-day moving average of $1,921.33, a stark illustration of how quickly sentiment has shifted. The relative strength index of 80.7 flags a deeply overbought condition, making short-term pullbacks more probable even as underlying capital flows remain sturdy.

The weekend liquidation event may serve as a healthy reset, but the market's direction now hinges on whether ETF inflows resume their torrid pace or stall as they did in mid-August. With the Senate vote looming and the SEC's rulemaking process underway, traders have no shortage of catalysts to watch — and no shortage of reasons for caution at these levels.
