Equinor has more than doubled its estimate of recoverable gas at the Afrodite discovery following an appraisal well, putting the volumes at 77–180 million barrels of oil equivalent. The Norwegian energy major said on 29 October that it considers the find commercially viable.

The company is weighing a subsea development tied back to Kvitebjørn, though no sanction decision has been announced — the subsea tie-back remains one option under review. Equinor and Aker BP have separately struck a strategic collaboration aimed at developing technically demanding discoveries in low-permeability reservoirs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Output Guidance Raised Alongside Q3 Results

A day before the Afrodite update, Equinor lifted its 2026 production growth forecast to around 4%, up from 3% previously. The upgrade accompanied third-quarter 2026 results, in which adjusted operating profit came in at USD 12.35 billion. Net profit reached USD 2.54 billion, while adjusted net profit was USD 2.86 billion.

On 27 October the board approved a cash dividend of USD 0.39 per share for the quarter, payable on 26 February 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Equinor?

Danske Bank Lifts Target, Morgan Stanley Cuts Rating

Danske Bank raised its price target on Equinor to NOK 407 from NOK 360, according to Bloomberg News, while keeping its recommendation at "Hold." The higher target points to a more favourable valuation case within the bank's analysis, but a buy rating would require a more positive stance — and the house has so far stuck with its neutral view.

Morgan Stanley moved the other way, downgrading Equinor to "Underweight" from "Equal Weight" with a NOK 375 target. No specific rationale for the downgrade was disclosed. The two calls leave investors with a split picture: a richer valuation from Danske Bank against a more cautious read from Morgan Stanley.

Visund Outage Remains the Operational Test

At the asset level, Equinor is preparing repairs to the Visund platform, where production has been halted since a fire on Wednesday, Reuters reported. Gassco expects the shutdown to last until 16 November, though the timetable could shift.

Equinor at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The facility has a daily gas delivery capacity of 13.2 million cubic metres, roughly 3.7% of Norway's export capacity. Equinor holds a 53.2% stake. Remaining crew are handling logistics and securing the fire zone, after which repairs and restart preparations will follow. No confirmed date has been set for resuming production or bringing the full crew back.

For now, the raised Danske Bank target supports Equinor's valuation case for as long as that assessment holds. Morgan Stanley's downgrade and the production outage — with Visund's return still unresolved — argue against a more aggressive positioning. The next concrete operational marker is the announced restart date, which remains provisional.
