Enovix Investors Brace for Leadership Vacuum as Battery Milestones Take Back Seat

The abrupt departure of Enovix's chief executive has thrown the battery developer's stock into its most volatile stretch of the year, with the shares careening between a fresh 52-week low and a modest rebound within a single trading session.
Raj Talluri left the company on Thursday to join semiconductor equipment maker Kulicke & Soffa, catching both the market and sell-side analysts off guard. Chief financial officer Ryan Benton, who joined Enovix in April 2025 and brings more than 35 years of industry experience, has stepped in as interim CEO. T.J. Rodgers assumes the role of executive chairman. Management insists the transition leaves both strategy and third-quarter guidance untouched, yet the damage to investor confidence has been immediate and measurable.
The stock tumbled as much as 13 percent on Tuesday to EUR 2.69, hovering just above the day's 52-week trough of EUR 2.68, before clawing back to EUR 3.15 — a 1.6 percent gain on the day. Even with that stabilization, the shares remain down roughly 51 percent since the start of the year.
Rate Pressures Compound Leadership Concerns
Tuesday's sell-off was amplified by a broader rotation out of speculative, pre-revenue technology names. Yields on 30-year US Treasuries climbed above 5.3 percent, their highest level in 19 years, prompting investors to shed positions in companies that have yet to generate meaningful profits. Enovix found itself caught in that crosscurrent, with the macro headwind arriving just as the leadership shakeup was sinking in.
Analyst reactions have been swift and, in some cases, severe. William Blair downgraded the stock from "Outperform" to "Market Perform" on Monday, dropping its price target altogether on expectations that the resignation will weigh on investor sentiment in the near term. Loop Capital slashed its target from USD 100 to USD 15 in a single move. Bank of America and Craig-Hallum also trimmed their expectations.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Enovix?
Not every firm has turned cautious. Cantor Fitzgerald reaffirmed an "Overweight" rating with a USD 25 price target, signaling that at least some on the Street see the sell-off as overdone.
Operational Progress Continues Beneath the Noise
For all the turmoil at the top, Enovix's underlying business has been delivering. Second-quarter results, released on August 12, showed revenue of USD 9.0 million, up 21 percent year over year and at the upper end of the company's own guidance. The net loss of USD 0.13 per share came in better than the USD 0.15 deficit analysts had penciled in.
The technology side has also hit notable benchmarks. Enovix demonstrated 1,000 charge cycles for its AI smartphone cells using 100 percent silicon anodes — a far cry from the roughly 10 cycles early prototypes managed years ago, and a meaningful signal that the technology is approaching commercial viability. Qualification work with partner Honor is being prioritized, with samples for a second smartphone maker slated for the fourth quarter of 2026.
A smartphone customer has meanwhile validated the cells through more than 1,000 test cycles, and Enovix has begun shipping an initial order of 50,000 batteries for smart eyewear products. The defense and drone segment, which accounted for 65 percent of second-quarter revenue, saw its backlog and pipeline grow 41 percent to USD 183 million.
Capacity Expansion and Production Timelines
The company is also pushing ahead with its manufacturing footprint. Operations in Korea are slated to expand from USD 40 million to USD 100 million, while in Malaysia the site acceptance for a new production line has been completed. Mass production for smartphones remains on track to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Management has confirmed third-quarter guidance of revenue between USD 9.0 million and USD 10.0 million, with a loss per share ranging from USD 0.13 to USD 0.17. Looking further out, the company plans to transition to mechanical laser-dicing processes in 2027 to address technical bottlenecks.
The tension now facing Enovix is straightforward: the operational story is advancing, but the market's attention is fixed on the executive suite and the macro environment. Until the leadership question settles and rate pressures ease, the stock's fate may hinge less on battery chemistry and more on investor psychology.
