Dutch Employers Handed €500 Home-Office Ergonomics Allowance as Regional Return-to-Office Trend Accelerates

A new financial incentive in the Netherlands is putting the spotlight on workplace safety beyond the office walls. Dutch employers are now expected to set aside a €500 "Arbobudget" per remote worker to cover the cost of ergonomic furniture and equipment for home-based setups — a move that underscores how seriously European regulators are taking the physical wellbeing of people who split their time between kitchen tables and corporate desks.
The announcement, made public on 14 August 2026, requires companies to use the funds for so-called Arbovoorzieningen, the Dutch term for workplace safety provisions. The measure is designed to ensure that statutory occupational health standards apply just as strictly to a home office as they do to a traditional company premises.
This push for better home-work ergonomics comes at a moment when the picture of remote work across the border in Germany is shifting noticeably. Data gathered by the IHK Bergisch, the regional chamber of industry and commerce, in mid-August 2026 shows that employees in the Bergisches Land area — a region stretching across cities like Wuppertal and Solingen — are now spending far fewer days working from home.
